### Summary
Inbox rows and search results show each message as a 2-line preview.
That preview was a capped `MessageContent`, so gpt_markdown parsed and
laid out the whole source (syntax-highlighted code blocks and measured
tables included), even though only two lines are painted. A native trace
on an iPhone 12 mini attributed a 102 ms inbox-open frame mostly to this
work.
Previews now skip Markdown entirely. `messagePreviewSource` takes only
the leading lines a preview can show, and at most the first 4,000
characters of a single long line, so link normalization, mention binding
and emoji lookup never scan the rest of a long message.
`messagePreviewPieces` is then a linear pass over those lines, similar
to desktop's `getMarkdownPreviewText`. It drops block syntax (headings,
quotes, list markers, rules, table dividers, code fences) and unwraps
inline emphasis and `<u>`, honoring backslash escapes and keeping inline
(including multi-backtick) and fenced code as literal text. It also
replaces links with their label. The new `MessagePreview` widget renders
the result as a single `Text.rich` with `maxLines` and an ellipsis.
Tokens keep the look they have in the thread view:
- A bound mention is the same `MessageMentionPill` chip, with the bot
icon for agents. An ambiguous mention stays as text.
- `#channel` tokens and `buzz://channel/...` links are the same channel
token chip.
- A `buzz://message`, repo, PR or issue link that shows its own URL
previews with the thread view's short label, such as `general ·
abcdef01`. Both use the shared `buzzLinkLabel` helper.
- Custom emoji render as inline images. Only shortcodes the message
names are looked up in the palette.
- Media links show as "Image", "Video" or "Audio".
Chips in previews are not tappable, and tapping the row opens the
message. Bold, italic, inline code and link styling are no longer shown
in previews. The timeline and thread view are unchanged, and so is the
profile status line, which still uses `MessageContent`.
This replaces this PR's earlier approach of cutting the Markdown source
before parsing. That approach needed delimiter-balance heuristics, and a
security review found a real case (`**` inside a link label) where the
heuristic misfired.
### Validation
- `preview_text_test.dart` is a table test of the parser: block syntax,
emphasis that must and must not unwrap (`snake_case`, a lone `*`),
inline and fenced code, unpaired backticks, links, tables, the line
limit and the long-line cap. It also covers mentions (bound, ambiguous,
inside emphasis, link labels and code), custom emoji (including adjacent
`🅰️b:`), channel tokens and links, message and repo link labels, and
media. The long-line row also asserts that `messagePreviewSource`
returns a bounded prefix.
- `message_preview_test.dart` checks the widget: no `GptMarkdown`, one
capped and ellipsized paragraph, mention chip, custom emoji image,
channel chip, media label and empty content.
- Existing inbox and search tests updated to find `MessagePreview`,
including the agent-chip test in search.
- `flutter analyze` and the full mobile test suite pass at 8c721ba3a
(with `--dart-define=BUZZ_PUSH_GATEWAY_URL=https://push.example`, as
`just mobile-test` runs it).
- Device A/B on an iPhone 12 mini, using Profile builds against the real
inbox on the internal relay. Each run was a cold launch followed by 6
Inbox opens, in the order main, fix, main, fix:

| All opens, median build total | 43.4 ms | 26.6 ms |
First open drops about 40% in build time and about 14 ms in worst frame.
On warm opens, build time also drops about 40%, but the worst frame
barely moves, so what remains in those frames is not the preview parse.
## Codex review status
Codex reviewed this PR over four rounds. Every finding about cost or
correctness is fixed, and those threads are resolved. Later rounds
turned up narrower and narrower preview edge cases, so the author
decided to stop iterating on Codex findings. Any Codex thread still
open, or any finding Codex posts after f538853ed, is a deliberately
accepted preview limitation and doesn't block merging. Example: a [code
span that continues across a line
break](https://github.com/block/buzz/pull/8675#discussion_r4415196032)
can preview a mention as a chip. The full message view is unaffected.
Only the one- or two-line inbox and search previews can differ from it.

## Summary
On iOS, an authored Markdown link renders as blank when its label is
recognized as a Buzz channel, mention, or custom emoji. For example:
```markdown
[#2959](https://example.com/)
```
The surrounding text remains visible, but the link has no visible label
or tap target.
Buzz's `_ChannelLinkMd`, `_MentionMd`, and `CustomEmojiMd` components
return `WidgetSpan`s. `gpt_markdown` also renders an authored link
through a `WidgetSpan` and reparses its label through the registered
components. Because the Buzz components were allowed to run inside link
labels, the result was a placeholder nested inside another placeholder,
which does not paint on iOS.
This PR adds the same scope restriction used by `gpt_markdown`'s
built-in link component:
```dart
@override
Set<MarkdownScope> get scopes =>
MarkdownComponent.allScopesExceptLinkLabel;
```
The override is applied to all three widget-based components. Authored
labels such as `[#2959](url)`, `[@Alice](url)`, and `[👋](url)`
therefore remain ordinary link text, while the same tokens outside links
continue rendering as Buzz pills and custom emoji.
The PR also updates the shared test helpers to find `RichText`
subclasses. Since the upgrade to `gpt_markdown` 1.2.1, body paragraphs
can render through `BidiRichText`; `find.byType(RichText)` does not
match that subclass and could allow an absence assertion to pass without
inspecting the message text.
The handling of unknown bare `#tokens` is deliberately unchanged.
Whether those should remain non-interactive pills or become plain text
is a separate product decision.
### Related issue
Fixes#6124.
This supersedes #6135. That PR solves the same issue by maintaining a
custom fork of `gpt_markdown`'s link component; this PR instead uses the
scoped-component API already available in `gpt_markdown` 1.2.1.
### Testing
Focused suites:
```bash
flutter test \
test/features/channels/message_content_test.dart \
test/features/channels/message_content_custom_emoji_test.dart
```
Result: 95 tests passed, 0 failed.
Additional checks:
- `just mobile-check` — passed; analyzer reported no issues.
- `just mobile-fmt` — passed; 549 files formatted with 0 changes.
- Six new regression tests cover channel, mention, emoji, plain-link
control, and outside-link behavior.
- Removing the `_ChannelLinkMd` override causes two regression tests to
fail; removing `_MentionMd` or `CustomEmojiMd` causes one test to fail
in each case.
- Three tests in `message_content_test.dart` directly assert that the
nested-placeholder structure is absent. The custom-emoji tests
separately verify literal text and the absence or presence of
`CustomEmojiImage`, depending on whether the shortcode is inside or
outside a link.
The complete local mobile suite reports 15 failures that reproduce
identically on a clean checkout of `main` at `44316ff7`. In [CI for that
same commit](https://github.com/block/buzz/actions/runs/34238736818),
`Clients / Mobile`, `Mobile`, and `Mobile Swift Domain / Mobile Swift`
all passed.
No native-device screenshot is included. The nested-placeholder fix was
verified through the rendered widget structure, but an iOS simulator
build was blocked by the existing `MLImage.framework` arm64-simulator
incompatibility.

Builds on the mobile polish merged in #8359; this PR now targets `main`.
On iOS, inline photo galleries now use a UIKit collection view for
dragging, deceleration, and snapping. Photo taps retain the existing
full-screen viewer and reply/more actions; gallery scrolling continues
to fade the message avatar. The final photo stops at the full message
gutter rather than the smaller gap between photos. Android keeps the
current Flutter carousel.
Visible cells subscribe to continuing frames from Flutter's existing
authenticated image providers, preserving animated GIF/APNG/WebP media.
Request IDs fence late frames and cancel subscriptions on
reuse/disappearance/disposal. A four-slot bound includes retired
unresolved loads until their transport terminates. Shared media fetches
now use abortable HTTP requests with a 30-second deadline through
response-body completion, so stalled requests release their slots
without leaving live transports behind; native eager precaching is
disabled so it cannot bypass that bound. Frame conversion coalesces to
the newest pending frame. Native cells expose photo labels and positions
to VoiceOver, support RTL, and preserve the selected photo during
resizing.
Validation:
- Mobile formatting and analysis passed.
- Native simulator regression checks passed for geometry, RTL, snapping,
taps, frame replacement, cancellation, and resizing. The native CI lane
now runs the carousel executable.
- Full mobile suite and pre-push gates passed, including two-frame GIF
delivery, delayed-provider bounds/cancellation, real HTTP
stalled-header/body recovery with four requests maximum, disposal, and
unconfigured-push tests.
- Signed iPhone Release build of the frame/subscription implementation
passed. Physical iPhone testing covered the earlier carousel/gutter
revision; the new animation/cancellation changes have local Flutter and
native simulator coverage, not a new physical-device journey.
Preview-only signing overrides preserve its bundle/Keychain group;
production entitlements are unchanged. Local provisioning excludes
production push/App Attest capabilities.
- Full `just ci` was started but stopped after unrelated Rust/desktop
compilation consumed about 5 GB; broad CI is incomplete.
Device build required local Xcode 27 workarounds: iOS 16 deployment
target and a generated swift-secp256k1 cache compatibility edit. Neither
changes repository source.

Builds on the merged themes work in #8358 and inherits its appearance
and chat-color settings.
Polishes mobile conversations with uniform rounded bubbles,
desktop-style text-only mentions and agent icon, aligned gallery counts,
fading gallery avatars, and standard iOS scrolling. Huddles use rounded
cards with attached reaction trays, without duplicate start/end notices;
other activity rows stay centered with smaller text.
Validation: mobile checks, the full mobile test suite, and the gallery
regression test passed. Release build installed on iPhone. Full `just
ci` could not finish: desktop compilation exhausted local disk space.

## Summary
Refresh mobile conversations with left-aligned grouped bubbles without
tails, tighter consecutive-message spacing, distinct sender colors,
theme-aware incoming backgrounds, and compact overlapping reaction
trays. Attach reply counts beside reactions with up to three participant
avatars; keep outgoing mentions and links readable in both themes.
Coordinate a 500 ms composer-to-message transition with spring
contraction and an anchored avatar. Message ownership follows the
signing identity so profile reloads cannot recolor outgoing bubbles.
Center channel activities without timestamps or icons, keep names
tappable, and show two affected members plus a **See all** sheet. Hide
legacy purpose activities, match media corners to bubble groups, and add
iOS status-bar scroll-to-top. This is an independent mobile PR; no
desktop changes or color picker.
## Validation
- Full `just mobile-check` passed; `just mobile-test` passed 3,275 tests
with 4 skips, plus 3 unconfigured-gateway checks.
- Fixed message-widget lint warnings and a stale notification fixture
that blocked analysis. Made the video-controller disposal test wait for
lifecycle events instead of fixed delays. Mobile pre-push checks are
enabled.
- Physical iPhone previews were installed throughout development. The
latest bubble, reply-avatar, contrast, and spacing updates were
installed and launched on the physical iPhone. Final motion and
status-bar behavior still need device visual verification; Android has
automated coverage but no physical-device verification.

## Summary
Preview buzz-app's Tabler icon style in the mobile app, replacing
app-drawn Lucide glyphs across channels, messages, activity, search, and
settings. A shared `BuzzIcons` mapping uses the bundled Tabler 3.46.0
outline font, matching buzz-app's version, with its MIT license and
source documented.
Native UIKit controls retain SF Symbols. The former 300/500 navigation
glyphs use Tabler's standard outline; existing selection colors and
labels remain.

## Summary
In a channel conversation, two identities with the same display name
looked identical. In the example below, the channel shows "Bad Janet"
twice, for two different identities. A reader cannot tell which one was
added and then removed.
This PR uses the contextual names from the previous PR everywhere a
conversation names someone:
- Message authors, threads, forum posts and replies
- Reactions, the typing indicator, and system rows (joined, added,
removed)
- Inline mentions and the agent activity sheet
- The profile sheet title, which now matches the row that opened it
Names are compared against the channel's members, so a label only gets
longer when a real collision exists in that channel.
The mention picker labels each choice against every candidate, so two
"Honey" choices look different. When you pick one, it still inserts the
identity's own name ("@Honey"), so the message text does not change.
Part 2 of 3: #7894 (resolver) → #7895 (conversations) → #7896 (lists,
Search, Pulse).
### Related issue

### Testing
- A widget test checks that the profile sheet names an author the same
way the channel does.
- A unit test checks that two same-name mention choices get different
labels but insert the same wire name.
- `flutter analyze` is clean, and the full `flutter test` suite passes.
- Checked on an Android emulator against the live relay, in an archived
channel with two identities named "Bad Janet".

When a channel screen updates, Buzz Mobile can parse and format a
message again even when its text has not changed. This repeated work
runs on the same thread that handles taps and updates the screen.
The current Markdown library, `gpt_markdown` 1.2.1, checks whether the
objects used to render mentions, emoji, and channel links have changed.
Buzz creates new objects on every message rebuild, so the library parses
the message again. This change reuses those objects while their inputs
stay the same. Changes to labels, mention targets, emoji, media details,
or available actions still update the message. Taps continue to use the
latest action handlers.
In a synthetic test with the production message widget, ten unchanged
rebuilds caused 30 parser calls before this change and zero after it.
The first render still requires parsing. This test measures repeated
parsing, not overall screen speed.
Validation:
- All 91 focused message tests and 2,127 mobile tests passed. The new
regression test fails with the original code. Tests also cover changed
message data and current tap actions.
- Static checks across the repository, desktop and Tauri tests, and
desktop and web builds passed. The full local test run hit an existing
Rust ACP keepalive timing failure. Its exact retry passed, and all
checks skipped after that failure were run separately and passed.

**Category:** improvement
**User Impact:** Buzz channel, message, repository, pull request, and
issue links now display recognizable context and navigate reliably in
the mobile app.
**Problem:** Bare Buzz permalinks appeared as raw or ambiguous URLs on
mobile, while channel and message links were not handled consistently
across Markdown forms and startup states.
**Solution:** Normalize eligible bare Buzz URLs without consuming
Markdown syntax, render them as semantic icon-prefixed chips, and route
channel/message targets through the mobile deep-link dispatcher while
preserving authored Markdown labels as ordinary links.

## Reproduction steps
1. Run the mobile app and open a channel containing bare
`buzz://channel`, `buzz://message`, `buzz://repo`, `buzz://pr`, and
`buzz://issue` URLs.
2. Confirm each bare URL renders as one cohesive chip with a type icon,
a useful name or shortened identifier, and no duplicated channel `#`
character.
3. Add an authored Markdown link such as `[design
discussion](buzz://issue?...)` and confirm the supplied label remains an
ordinary link rather than becoming a chip.
4. Select channel and message links and confirm they navigate correctly
from inline and autolinked forms.
