d25384a4f3 buzz-db: admit every fenced-table writer in app code (#8219)
## Summary

This makes every serving writer of a community-write-fenced table take
community admission in application code. That's the "Dual enforcement"
step of the Supported Writer Contract in `ARCHITECTURE.md`. Admission
means the shared community deletion lock plus the active/not-deleted
check from `deletion::guard_community_write`. It's taken before the
transaction's first tenant write or row lock and held until commit.

The 32 `community_write_fence_*` triggers, the six fence SQL functions
and `validate_serving_catalog` are unchanged. They stay authoritative.
Removing them is a separate migration that will be checked table by
table.

## Changes

- **New admission entry point.** `begin_community_write_transaction`
(`runtime/mod.rs`) builds an `AdmittedTx` for non-event writers. It sits
next to the existing event-write entry points and shares their
implementation.
- **Writers moved onto it:**
- `api_tokens`, `archived_identities`, `channels`, `channel_members`
(including DM and admin paths), `community_bans`, `git_repo_names`
- `moderation_actions` and `moderation_reports`,
`personal_read_accounts` and `personal_read_frontiers`,
`pubkey_allowlist`
  - `push_leases`, `push_match_queue`, `push_wake_outbox`
- `relay_invites`, `relay_members` (including the new-community owner
bootstrap and the startup `pubkey_allowlist` backfill),
`join_policy_acceptances`
- `thread_metadata`, `users`, `workflows`, `workflow_runs`,
`workflow_approvals`, `scheduled_workflow_fires`
  - Personal-read helpers now require `&mut AdmittedTx`.
- **`buzz-audit`.** An append now passes admission first, then takes a
transaction-scoped audit-chain lock (`pg_advisory_xact_lock`). This
replaces the session lock and the `catch_unwind` unlock cleanup. The
relay audit worker retries a `lock_timeout` on either lock and keeps the
entry; an admission refusal is terminal, as the trigger's refusal was.
- **Fleet-wide statements.** These keep `community_write_allowed(...)`
in the same SQL statement, because there's no single community to admit
up front:
  - scheduled-fire prune
  - invite expiry
  - push matcher claim and exhausted-job cleanup
  - startup `d_tag` backfill
  - channel TTL cleanup
- **Relay-member removal.** `remove_relay_member` and
`remove_relay_member_if_role` run `delete_member_with_acceptances`
inside their admitted transaction. The helper no longer opens its own
transaction, so the member lock, the `join_policy_acceptances` delete
and the member delete all hold admission until commit. `delete_workflow`
and `delete_workflow_for_owner` are gone on `main`, and the coordinate
deletion path they used to back was already admitted.
- **Unchanged exceptions.** The deletion-executor generation exception
and the serving-lease path work as before.
- **Tables with no production writer.** `delivery_log` and
`subscriptions` are only written by a historical cutover script and a
test fixture. Their triggers stay.
- **No cross-community moves.** No production `community_id` move exists
on a fenced table. The only `SET community_id = NULL` is the
deletion-executor purge. So no dual-community lock ordering was needed.

## What got simpler

- Per-store ad-hoc writer helpers are gone:
`begin_event_write_transaction` and `acquire_event_write_connection` in
`channel.rs`, and `begin_operation_transaction` in `push.rs`.
- Audit append drops the session advisory unlock, the
`catch_unwind`/`resume_unwind` panic handling, `log_inner` and the
`futures-util` dependency.

## Notes for reviewers

- **New crate dependency.** `buzz-audit` now depends on `buzz-db` only
to call the free function `buzz_db::deletion::guard_community_write`.
`ARCHITECTURE.md` names this as the one sanctioned subsystem edge, and
its audit section is updated to match.
- **Hot paths.** `ensure_user` first checks whether the user exists and
returns without admission when it does (no write happens). Only a real
insert takes admission. `touch_api_token` has no production caller
today.
- **No-op writers stay read-only.** The startup allowlist backfill
returns early on plain reads when the legacy table is gone, it has no
rows for the community, or the community already has members, so a
quiescing deployment community still starts. It re-checks under
admission before inserting.
- **Owner mutations.** When admission refuses a transfer or a
provisioning and a deletion request exists, both report
`DeletionPending`, as before. For a transfer, the operator API keeps its
coded `deletion_lifecycle_conflict` 409. For provisioning, it keeps the
existing uncoded 409, `owner_conflict: community deletion is pending`.
- **Per-community worker loops.** `claim_due_push_wakes` and similar now
return `AccessDenied` for a community that goes quiescing between the
active-host scan and the claim. The worker logs it at `debug` and the
next scan skips the community.
- **Kick side effects.** `membership_removal_fence` admits before the
membership lock to keep the lock order of `add_member`. A community that
leaves `active` between the kick and the fence skips live subscription
eviction; the membership cache is already invalidated and fan-out
re-checks membership. This is documented on the function.

## Testing

- **New refusal tests.** 19 tests: the 18 in
`store::admission_postgres_tests`, plus
`audit_append_requires_application_admission_with_triggers_bypassed`.
Each runs with ordinary triggers disabled (`session_replication_role =
replica`), checks that a raw fenced insert would succeed, and asserts
that the writer is refused for both `quiescing` and `fenced`
communities. Active writes still succeed.
- **The tests catch a missing check.** Measured in review at
`6fc073c3f`: with the guard in `AdmittedTx::admit` bypassed, 25 tests
fail. That includes 16 of the 18 database admission tests. The audit
test stays green there, because audit calls `guard_community_write`
directly.
- **Affected PG suites, with triggers on:** 183/183 passed across 16
store suites, push 18/18 run isolated, audit 7/7. The existing artifact,
reaction and replaceable admission tests pass.
- **Review fixes, each checked to fail without its fix:**
- `allowlist_backfill_requires_application_admission` and
`owner_mutations_report_pending_deletion_when_admission_refuses` fail
with the old `relay_members.rs`.
- `empty_allowlist_backfill_skips_admission` fails (`AccessDenied …
write-fenced (quiescing)`) without the allowlist-rows early return.
-
`audit_worker_retries_admission_lock_timeout_until_original_entry_is_appended_once`
holds the community deletion lock exclusive and fails without the
admission retry arm.
- The existing audit-chain retry test now looks for the
transaction-scoped lock and passes.
- The two owner-revoke mini-schema tests (`bridge.rs`, `ingest.rs`) now
include `communities` and `community_deletion_lock_key`, which admission
reads; both failed without that.
- **Static checks:** `cargo fmt --check` and workspace `cargo clippy
--all-targets -D warnings` pass.
- **Not run locally:** the `mobile-check` step of `just ci` (the build
machine couldn't reach pub.dev, and clean base fails the same way) and
the full `just test` lane. CI on this PR covers both.
`mesh_demo::demo_join_forwarded_arm_round_trips_echo` fails on the build
machine at base `394d4a434` as well; it uses no database.

7881447c19 fix(audit): frame hash inputs with TLV (#7492)
Hash new audit entries from a TLV buffer built with one-byte field tags,
big-endian u64 byte lengths, and raw values. Absent optional fields are
omitted; present empty values retain their tag and zero length. This
prevents bytes from moving between fields without restricting object IDs
or inferring boundaries from field contents.

Store an explicit `hash_version`. Migration 0048 labels existing rows as
version 1, and new writers use version 2. Historical hashes are
unchanged and mixed-version chains verify. The legacy encoding retains
its original ambiguity; TLV protects new entries. Apply the migration
before deploying the updated writers and verifiers.

Tests cover both boundary collisions, absent versus empty fields, stable
digests, unknown versions, mixed-version chains, and stored-row
tampering. All 16 audit and 128 database unit tests passed. The six
PostgreSQL audit tests passed against both migrated and fresh schemas,
and a populated-row migration check preserved the historical hash. Full
`just ci` passed.

Related audit fixes: #4216 and #4249; issue #4173.

bd73490418 ci: run PostgreSQL tests in isolated lane (#6730)
## Why

PR #6660 introduced four PostgreSQL-backed persistence tests and a
focused CI selector, but an exact test-name list does not automatically
cover future database tests. Broad ignored-test execution also exposed
shared-schema races and ambiguity between desired-state and
migration-applied schema expectations.

## What

- Establish a discoverable convention: PostgreSQL unit modules use
`postgres_tests`, PostgreSQL integration binaries use a `postgres_`
prefix, and unrelated external-infrastructure tests use an
`external_infra_` prefix.
- Add a dedicated nextest PostgreSQL profile and archive-backed CI job
covering the relevant crates without enumerating test names.
- Create a run-scoped desired-state source database and a unique
PostgreSQL database per test process for parallel-safe isolation, with
cleanup on success, failure, or interruption.
- Route destructive migration and migration-parity tests to clean
`template0` databases while desired-state tests clone the desired-state
database.
- Document discovery, schema modes, required role privileges, and a
bounded portable local runner.
- Keep the existing infrastructure-free unit-test jobs unchanged.

This is intentionally limited to test and CI harness behavior. It does
not move production database code, change persistence semantics, or
implement issue #20's broader shared test-utility refactor.

## Risk

Low production risk because all changes are confined to tests, CI
configuration, documentation, and test harness scripts.

Remaining operational risks:

- Cleanup retries `dropdb --force` five times across roughly four
seconds. Exhaustion warns with the database name but deliberately does
not mask the test result; individual PostgreSQL diagnostics are
suppressed.
- The seven-package boundary is duplicated between the runner and CI
archive and must remain synchronized if PostgreSQL tests move to a new
crate.
- Portable SHA fallback branches were exercised on Linux; no macOS Blox
workstation was needed for this Linux CI artifact.
- GitHub's unchanged generic Unit Tests job currently fails while
cold-linking `buzz-voice` because `sherpa-onnx-c-api` is absent. The
branch changes no voice/build/toolchain inputs; the exact parent
previously passed that job, and Blox passes the same infrastructure-free
suite (1,450/1,450). A prior-head one-job retry and the final-head run
both reproduced the hosted-runner failure.

## Verification

Author Blox workstation `2020088`:

- `cargo fmt --all -- --check`
- `just clippy`
- `just test-unit`: 1,450 passed; PostgreSQL tests remain skipped in
fast jobs
- PR #6660 focused tests: 4/4 passed through the final runner
- Full lane: 282/282 passed in 10.087s with a non-superuser role limited
to `CREATEDB`, `CREATEROLE`, and `pg_read_all_stats`
  - 272 desired-state tests
  - 10 migration-applied tests
  - 6 explicitly filtered external-infrastructure tests
- Cleanup fault injection: a deliberately underprivileged 282-test run
produced the expected 277 passes and 5 failures, and the post-run
catalog audit found zero lane databases after retry cleanup. The
restored successful run also left zero lane databases.

GitHub exact final head `92c231e48f299ea2af23817763f5ae80ac013d68`:

- [PostgreSQL
Tests](https://github.com/block/buzz/actions/runs/32789030203/job/97630827823):
282/282 passed across 10 binaries in 98.886s; 1,240 skipped, including 6
via the profile filter
- The shared relay/PostgreSQL archive predecessor completed successfully
- [Unit
Tests](https://github.com/block/buzz/actions/runs/32789030203/job/97626930420):
unrelated `sherpa-onnx-c-api` native-link failure described above
- Independent exact-head review on separate Blox workstation `2022762`:
no substantive findings after all initial findings were addressed. The
reviewer independently verified cleanup retry behavior, exit-status
preservation, shell portability, syntax, and a clean exact-head
worktree.

## Update — August 24, 2026 review follow-up

- Centralized the repeated PostgreSQL test URL resolution in
crate-local, test-only helpers without introducing the broader shared
utility refactor from issue #20.
- Restored descriptive hybrid/Redis test function names. Structural
`external_infra_*_tests` modules now own exclusion, and the nextest
filter only recognizes module path segments.
- Added a three-second source guard that scans every Rust file and fails
CI when an ignored PostgreSQL test would be omitted or an
external-infrastructure test would be included. Fixture tests cover
accepted modules/binaries and both failure modes.
- Removed the two implementation-plan documents.

Performance profiling on Blox workstation `2027352` (same prebuilt
archive and cargo-nextest 0.9.143 for every comparison):

- Current per-test database model, 8 workers: 10.15–10.40s across three
runs. The 283 `createdb` calls and 284 `dropdb` calls consumed
28.85–29.46 aggregate seconds, about 39–40% of aggregate test-process
duration.
- Reusing one database per worker without cleanup: 6.55–6.84s, about 35%
faster, but all three runs failed because global matcher-queue tests
inherited a quiesced community from an earlier test; the failing test
varied with scheduling.
- Reusing workers with `TRUNCATE … RESTART IDENTITY CASCADE`: all 282
tests passed, but total time regressed to 10.47–10.67s. The 265 truncate
calls consumed 24.34–25.45 aggregate seconds, so truncation merely
replaced most clone/drop cost.
- Raising concurrency to 16 workers reduced one isolated-database run to
8.79s, but 24 workers exposed a cluster-global `pg_stat_activity` race.
The profile remains at the proven-safe 8 workers.

Decision: retain unique per-test databases. Harness cleanup uses `dropdb
--if-exists --force`; it drops the database rather than truncating
tables or deleting rows.

Verification at local branch head
`60086c1f6ee34a193c342255a5e8e6293b60e988`:

- Discovery inventory: exactly 282 intended tests; all 6 hybrid/Redis
tests present and structurally excluded.
- PR #6660 focused persistence tests: 4/4 passed.
- Full PostgreSQL lane: 282/282 passed three times; 1,240 skipped each
run; wall time 9.72–9.96s without profiling shims.
- Non-ignored tests with a desired-state database: 1,234/1,234 passed;
one mesh-demo timeout from the first run passed immediately in
isolation.
- `cargo fmt --all -- --check` and all-target/all-feature clippy for
`buzz-db`, `buzz-deletion`, and `buzz-relay` passed.

Final independent re-review at exact head
`42097c0136ab3fa8f0efe5720ae829c04575b9b6` on separate Blox workstation
`2028455`: no substantive residual findings. The reviewer independently
exercised ordinary strings, zero/one/three-hash raw strings, line/block
comments, and string-contained lookalikes, then reran the full 353-file
scan, shell syntax, Python AST parsing, and diff check.

Independent review found that the source guard's initial regular
expression could miss raw-string ignore reasons and treat a commented
attribute as real. Final head `42097c0136ab3fa8f0efe5720ae829c04575b9b6`
parses valid ordinary/raw Rust string literals only at attributes found
in comment-sanitized source; regression fixtures cover both cases. The
fixture suite, Python compilation, shell syntax, diff check, and full
353-file repository scan pass on Blox.

## Update — August 25, 2026 restack

PR #6660 merged, so this follow-up was rebased from its former exact
parent onto current `origin/main`
(`8d2d0ff5ad42733e9949442c4b6358d0ba87f9a8`). The final candidate head
is `05dcc2ab28948e3ab79bb44839a69f2ba44648a2`; the PR no longer carries
#6660's pre-squash history.

Fresh exact-head verification on Blox workstation `2028572`:

- Discovery guard passed across 353 Rust files; inventory remained
exactly 282 intended PostgreSQL tests.
- PR #6660 focused persistence tests: 4/4 passed.
- Full PostgreSQL lane: 282/282 passed three times; 1,243 skipped each
run; wall time 9.70–9.87s.
- `cargo fmt --all -- --check` and all-target/all-feature clippy for
`buzz-db`, `buzz-deletion`, and `buzz-relay` passed.

## Update — August 25, 2026 final hosted verification

- [GitHub PostgreSQL
Tests](https://github.com/block/buzz/actions/runs/32801679226/job/97667835080):
282/282 passed in 53.787s; 1,243 skipped.
- The final guard scanned all 353 Rust files successfully before the
hosted lane ran.
- The shared relay/archive prerequisite and infrastructure-free Unit
Tests job both passed at exact final head
`42097c0136ab3fa8f0efe5720ae829c04575b9b6`.

113a33b7e4 Add database pressure observability (#6700)
## Why

Database pressure currently collapses several distinct delays into one
symptom. This adds the evidence layer needed to distinguish pool
acquisition wait, logical database operation time, advisory-lock wait,
and selected transaction duration before changing timeout or retry
policy.

This is the phase 2 Lane A observability bundle for
[#26](https://github.com/TheSentinel454/buzz/issues/26),
[#28](https://github.com/TheSentinel454/buzz/issues/28), and
[#33](https://github.com/TheSentinel454/buzz/issues/33). It is stacked
on #6668.

## What

- Record explicit reader/writer checkout wait and acquisition outcomes
with `buzz_db_pool_acquire_wait_seconds` and
`buzz_db_pool_acquisitions_total`.
- Extend the compile-time `#[datastore_span(name = "...")]` seam with
`buzz_db_operation_duration_seconds`, so operation labels remain static
source literals instead of request data.
- Route correctness-critical replacement, membership, push-gate,
deletion, and migration/schema-safety advisory locks through one
observer without changing their SQL, order, scope, or blocking behavior.
- Measure six internally owned transaction lifetimes with
`buzz_db_transaction_duration_seconds`, starting after `BEGIN` succeeds
and ending after explicit commit/rollback or scope exit.
- Emit root slow-operation warnings at 500 ms, logging the first slow
completion and then 1/100 per call site with only `operation`,
`outcome`, and `elapsed_ms`.
- Document names, units, fixed label vocabularies, measurement
boundaries, and blind spots in this PR description.

Fixed labels are deliberately small:

- `pool_role`: `writer`, `reader`
- `lock_type`: `replacement`, `membership`, `push_gate`, `deletion`,
`migration_schema_safety`
- `outcome`: `success`, `error`, `timeout` where SQLx/PostgreSQL can
distinguish it accurately
- `operation`: compile-time datastore names plus the six closed
transaction operation names documented in the runbook

No metric or slow warning contains community IDs, event IDs, event
kinds, coordinates, d-tags, SQL/query text, query IDs, returned errors,
or event content.

## Coverage boundaries

- Operation duration is the complete annotated logical function body,
not pure SQL execution; it may include implicit checkout, lock wait,
nested operations, and application work. Cancelled futures do not reach
its completion hook.
- Pool timing covers explicit helper checkouts, including proved-reader
routing and selected writer-owned transactions. Implicit SQLx checkout
through `&PgPool` remains folded into operation duration.
- Lock timing covers application-side blocking locks in the five named
families. Trigger/stored-procedure locks, channel-TTL locking, the usage
try-lock, and the audit service session lock remain outside this slice.
- Transaction timing covers only the six wholly owned boundaries
documented in the runbook. It excludes pool wait, `BEGIN`, asynchronous
rollback cleanup after an early return, and caller-owned
`Db::begin_transaction` lifetime.

## Relationship to #6229

#6229 is the incident-driven timeout precursor. This PR does not add or
change `statement_timeout`, `lock_timeout`,
`idle_in_transaction_session_timeout`, retries, audit durability, or
client-visible conflicts. It provides the missing distributions needed
to evaluate those policies later and intentionally leaves #6229's open
audit retry/durability finding untouched.

The branches overlap in `crates/buzz-db/src/lib.rs` and
`crates/buzz-db/src/migration.rs`, so a later rebase may need textual
conflict resolution, but the behavior is complementary rather than
duplicated.

## Risk assessment

Moderate-low. The primary risk is instrumentation overhead and added
static series. Cardinality is source-bounded, slow logs are
sampled/redacted root events, and the lock/transaction changes wrap
existing awaits without changing policy or ordering.

- Native PostgreSQL focused tests for pool success/timeout/error, lock
success/contention/timeout/error, replacement, membership serialization,
push ordering, deletion fencing, migration/schema exclusion, and reader

The default-parallel relay run passed once; subsequent runs exposed the
existing load-sensitive

397796c5f3 feat(tracing): add PostgreSQL tracing spans (#3678)
## Why
Expose PostgreSQL datastore latency within existing request traces so
slow logical database operations can be identified without recording
tenant data or query arguments.

## What
- Add client spans around logical PostgreSQL operations across the
database facade, search, audit, replica fencing, and command persistence
- Use a dedicated `buzz_datastore` target and `db.system.name =
"postgresql"` for filtering and backend classification
- Exclude health-check database calls and scrub raw identifiers and
errors from newly traced paths

## Risk Assessment
Medium — this instruments frequently used datastore paths and increases
trace volume when enabled, but does not change SQL execution or
datastore behavior. Existing OpenTelemetry filtering controls export.

## References
- Pre-push clippy and fast unit-test hooks passed

264a56a226 fix(audit): hash created_at at the precision Postgres stores (#2638)
Fixes #2637 — full analysis and reproduction there.

## Problem

Audit entries are stamped and hashed with `Utc::now()` (nanoseconds),
then stored in a `TIMESTAMPTZ` column (microseconds). `compute_hash`
covers `created_at.to_rfc3339()`, and chrono emits 0/3/6/**9**
fractional digits depending on the value — so the digest written at
`service.rs:103` is computed over `…T12:00:00.123456789+00:00` while
`verify_chain` recomputes over the `…T12:00:00.123456+00:00` that
Postgres hands back.

Every hash chain backed by a real database therefore fails verification
at its first entry, on untampered data. That is not just a broken
feature — it means a genuinely forged row is indistinguishable from the
permanent baseline failure, so `HashMismatch` carries no signal.

It is invisible in CI because all six chain tests are `#[ignore =
"requires Postgres"]`, and the in-process `hash.rs` tests use a fixture
timestamp of `2026-01-01T00:00:00Z` — zero sub-seconds, the one value
where the bug cannot appear.

## Solution

Reduce `created_at` to the stored precision *before* hashing, so the
in-memory entry and the row are byte-identical:

```rust
pub fn to_storage_precision(created_at: DateTime<Utc>) -> DateTime<Utc> {
    created_at.trunc_subsecs(6)
}
```

`log_inner` is the only place that assigns `created_at` — every caller
goes through `NewAuditEntry`, which carries no timestamp — so this is a
single choke point. It is wrapped in a `log_timestamp()` helper purely
so the invariant is assertable without a database.

I chose truncation at the write path over the alternative (hashing a
precision-independent encoding such as
`timestamp_micros().to_be_bytes()`). Both fix the mismatch, but
truncating keeps the existing hash preimage format and gives the
stronger invariant: the `AuditEntry` returned from `log()` is now
exactly what a later read returns.

Truncation matches what actually happens on the wire — sqlx encodes
`DateTime<Utc>` as microseconds since the Postgres epoch, truncating —
so the value hashed is the value stored.

with `HashMismatch { seq: 2 }` / `HashMismatch { seq: 1 }` on untampered
chains.

**After**, same database:

```
test result: ok. 6 passed; 0 failed
```

`verify_detects_tampering_within_a_community` is the one to look at: it
asserts `HashMismatch` lands on the *tampered* entry's `seq`. It was
failing because verification already blew up on an earlier untampered
row — so the assertion proving tamper detection works had never actually
been exercised. It passes now.

Also:
- `cargo test -p buzz-audit --lib` (no Postgres) — 12 passed, 0 failed.
- `cargo clippy -p buzz-audit --all-targets -- -D warnings` — clean.
- `cargo fmt -p buzz-audit -- --check` — clean.

## New tests

Three in `hash.rs`, none needing Postgres:

- `storage_precision_drops_sub_microsecond_digits` — the helper's
contract, and that it is idempotent so a re-read value is unchanged.
- `nanosecond_timestamps_cannot_survive_a_database_round_trip` — asserts
the digests **differ**. This is the trap itself, written down so the
next person changing the hash preimage sees why the precision reduction
is load-bearing.
- `storage_precision_timestamps_survive_a_database_round_trip` — the
invariant the write path must hold.

Plus `log_timestamp_carries_no_sub_microsecond_digits` in `service.rs`,
deliberately **not** `#[ignore]`d, so a regression on the write path is
caught by `just test-unit` instead of only by Postgres-gated tests that
normally never run.

## Compatibility

Rows written before this stay unverifiable — they always were — so there
is no migration. An operator relying on an existing chain has to
re-anchor.

## Relationship to #2620

#2620 proposes a shared `verify_entries` walk (anchoring, seq
contiguity, tail-truncation detection) plus a `buzz-admin audit verify`
command. Its Postgres-free unit tests build entries in memory and would
pass regardless, but its `#[ignore]` Postgres tests and the operator
command itself would fail on every real chain until this lands. Worth
taking this first so that work has a verifiable baseline — the two
changes don't overlap in code.
