6f67dcdac4 fix(desktop): bump zip to 9 for RUSTSEC-2026-0367/0368/0369 (#8412)
🤖 Bumps the desktop app's direct `zip` dependency from 8 to 9 to clear
RUSTSEC-2026-0367, RUSTSEC-2026-0368 and RUSTSEC-2026-0369 on the
managed Node.js archive extraction path.

zip 9 makes `ZipArchive::name_for_index` and `ZipFile::name` fallible.
Managed Node.js zip validation now rejects an entry whose name can't be
decoded, and the "unsafe path" error prints the raw entry name lossily.
The absolute-path, drive-prefix, traversal and `enclosed_name()` checks
are unchanged.

The lockfile update is scoped to `zip`; it pulls in newer `zstd`,
`lzma-rust2` and `ppmd-rust` that zip 9 requires.

**`zip` 8 is still in release builds.** With `--features mesh-llm`,
`mesh-llm` v0.76.2 (`mesh-llm-system`, `mesh-llm-plugin-manager`,
`mesh-llm-host-runtime`) still depends on `zip` 8.6.0. That goes away
when the `mesh-llm` pin moves to a release that includes
Mesh-LLM/mesh-llm#2471.

5dc693aeaf Extract shared Huddle audio client for desktop consumers (#8129)
Huddle audio was embedded in the v0 desktop client, forcing other
clients to duplicate its protocol and codec behavior. This extracts
`buzz-audio-client` so v1 can depend on a pinned library revision
without building the v0 application.

The crate owns the bounded v2 audio handshake, roster parsing, wire
format, Opus sender, and per-peer NetEQ jitter buffer. The v0 human and
agent senders use it, and the desktop retains room admission,
identity/signing, TLS policy, device routing, mute, and teardown.
Receive decoding preserves v1's support for 120 ms Opus packets. No
relay protocol changes, speech models, or model downloads are included.
Docker builder stages include CMake because cargo-chef compiles the
workspace dependency graph.

Dependency security: Opus 0.4 replaces the unmaintained `audiopus_sys`
backend with `opusic-sys`. NetEQ is pinned exactly to 0.8.3 because its
published Rust sources never reference its declared ringbuf dependency.
RUSTSEC-2026-0293 is documented as unreachable for this audited source,
and a wrapper restriction rejects every other consumer of vulnerable
ringbuf versions. Independent review confirmed the scope;
re-audit/remove the exception when changing NetEQ. NetEQ 0.9.1 still
declares ringbuf 0.3, so a version bump alone does not remove it. Local
`cargo deny check` passes with this constrained exception.

Validation:
- All 21 shared-crate tests pass, including real loopback WebSocket
authentication/cancellation, real Opus-to-NetEQ playback, malformed
input, and 120 ms decoding. These tests are included in `just
test-unit`.
- Shared-crate, root workspace, and desktop Tauri Clippy pass; `just
desktop-tauri-check` passes.
- The desktop Tauri test workspace passes; native two-person
listening/device checks remain separate.
- All mandatory push checks pass at `d06bac5dc`, including the complete
Rust unit gate and desktop workspace checks. Existing agent timing and
relay log-capture tests failed under concurrent load, passed separately,
and passed in the full serial test run; no tests or hooks were skipped.
- One test-only fixture change allows cold Perl startup before the
escaped-process test's inner timeout (2 seconds instead of 300 ms). Its
independent 5-second watchdog, 300-second surviving pipe writer, and all
assertions remain intact. All eight process-helper tests pass;
independent review confirmed this still tests bounded drain completion.
- Dependency inspection confirms the library brings in no desktop
application, Tauri, identity store, relay server, or speech-model
crates.
- Independent source review found no correctness blockers.

Draft: a native two-person call, mute/leave/cancellation, and
microphone/speaker switching still need a runtime tryout and human
review. Full `just ci` was stopped during the unrelated mobile toolchain
download because of disk pressure; it is not a passing gate. Consumer
integration is tracked in block/buzz-app#489.

4544ba1713 chore(mesh): upgrade MeshLLM to 0.76.2 (#7559)
## Summary

Upgrade Buzz from MeshLLM `v0.76.0-rc9` to the latest stable [v0.76.2
release](https://github.com/Mesh-LLM/mesh-llm/releases/tag/v0.76.2) (via
v0.76.1).

- Update all eight Mesh git dependencies across desktop and relay smoke
examples; both lockfiles resolve all 47 Mesh packages to
`a0c1e66b0ac037dd56544b9e2d94969ea43d694f` (tag `v0.76.2`). All non-Mesh
lock records are unchanged by the 0.76.1 → 0.76.2 bump.
- Match Mesh's `ed25519-dalek = 3.0.0` and `rusqlite = 0.40`
dependencies.
- Explicitly enable rusqlite's `fallible_uint` feature, preserving
Buzz's existing `u64` SQL conversions when **mesh is disabled**.
Mesh-enabled builds previously supplied this transitively, so testing
both configurations matters.
- Temporarily pin **only** the optional `sqlx-sqlite` package to the
merged upstream compatibility fix
[transact-rs/sqlx#4402](https://github.com/transact-rs/sqlx/pull/4402),
revision `94aafe3a68884d923b0798a767c8d7f6cfda89d2`. SQLx 0.9.0 caps
`libsqlite3-sys` below 0.38, while Mesh 0.76 requires 0.38. Cargo
resolves the conflict even with SQLite disabled. The fix raises that
upper bound; remove the patch once released. Buzz's active PostgreSQL
driver stays on crates.io SQLx 0.9.0.
- Preserve the explicit Linux keyring 3 `crypto-rust` feature so Secret
Service sessions retain DH encryption independently of Mesh keyring 4.
- Preserve the dedicated examples-only `buzz-mesh-smoke` crate and
lifecycle workflow wiring, keeping Mesh/native-runtime dev dependencies
out of relay CI builds.
- v0.76.1 → v0.76.2 upstream delta: self-updater fix for composed
product-v2 bundles (Mesh-LLM/mesh-llm#1844) plus release plumbing — no
API changes affecting Buzz.
- Merged `origin/main` (`7c789dee0`) without rewriting shared PR
history.

### Validation at `ae4adba15` (local macOS ARM64, Hermit toolchain)

- **Passed:** `cargo test --locked -p buzz-mesh-smoke --all-targets`
(all six example harnesses compile; no live harness execution).
- **Passed:** desktop Tauri workspace tests, both default and
`--features mesh-llm` graphs (3,296 tests with mesh enabled, 0
failures).
- **Passed:** `just desktop-tauri-clippy` (both feature graphs, `-D
warnings`), root workspace clippy `-D warnings`, `cargo fmt --all
--check`.
- **Passed:** `--locked` metadata resolution for both workspaces;
lockfile diff audited to touch only Mesh package records.
- **Passed:** full pre-push hook suite on the final push (branch-skew,
rust-tests, desktop-tauri-checks, file-size-check) — no hooks bypassed.
- **Not run:** live Mesh inference/admission smoke or installed-app UI
exercise. CI lifecycle smoke coverage applies.

44316ff72f feat(mesh): upgrade to mesh-llm 0.76.0-rc8 and recommend Qwen3.8 27B (#6189)
Upgrades Buzz's mesh-llm dependencies through the released `v0.76.0-rc8`
tag (`2040765d`), including the Qwen3.8 curated recommendation and rc8's
scheduler/runtime improvements.

**Scope note:** the earlier open-relay/unenforced-admission mode has
been removed from this PR at Mic's direction — it is not a product mode
we want. Mesh admission remains roster/allowlist driven, exactly as on
`main`: on a relay with no NIP-43 membership snapshot the mesh runs
self-only. No NIP-11 mode probing, no mode-transition restarts. A future
perimeter/admission strategy for open relays will be designed
separately.

This PR also:
- seeds `BUZZ_AGENT_LLM_TIMEOUT_SECS=660` for mesh agents, above
MeshLLM's 600-second backend timeout;
- makes `desktop-tauri-clippy` lint both default and `mesh-llm` cfg
graphs;
- runs the feature-enabled desktop test suite in CI;
- recommends Qwen3.8 27B Q4_K_M for 64 GB-and-larger machines, then
ladders down through Gemma 4 E4B and Qwen 9B for smaller machines;
- keeps stored shared-compute `auto` translated to MeshLLM's supported
wire model `mesh`.

RC8 verification:
- `just ci` passed locally at
`92ecc7ec933bdd4df804cc9f28a2b51efa5313c5`.
- Pre-push differential gates passed, including both desktop Tauri cfg
graphs and package tests.
- A prior isolated runtime smoke used the RC8 binary's OpenAI endpoint
for a Buzz-shaped system/user/tool/tool-result/final-response loop; all
assertions passed and the isolated process was shut down.

Perf previously measured on M5 Metal, Qwen3.8-27B-Q4_K_M: TTFT 0.22–0.32
s, ~25 tok/s streaming; agent-shaped turns ~1 s to first token after the
first (prefix cache).

2c99ee7af5 fix(desktop): resolve bundled sidecar on cheap path and bound login-shell spawns (#6904)
## Why

PR #6330 split agent harness/runtime detection into a cheap (cache-only)
path and a forced (spawning) path. Two regressions followed, both
surfacing as every harness showing "(not installed)" / "CLI missing"
across the agent create/edit picker, Agents > Agent defaults, and
Settings > Agents — blocking agent create/edit until the user clicked
Install in Settings > Agents.

## Root cause

One underlying bug, two victims:

- **Boot false-negative.** The resolve cache is in-memory, so it starts
cold on every launch. `resolve_command_cached` (the cheap path)
consulted only the Buzz-managed shim dirs plus that cold cache, and
`buzz_managed_command_path`'s allowlist structurally excludes
`buzz-agent`. The bundled sidecar could therefore never resolve on the
cheap path until a forced pass warmed the cache, so cheap-path surfaces
rendered all-missing at boot. App setup never warms the cache.
- **"Check again" hang.** `run_in_login_shell` used an untimeouted
`Command::output()`; a wedged login shell froze the whole forced
pipeline, leaving "Check again" spinning forever.

## What

- `resolve_command_cached` now also calls `resolve_workspace_command`,
resolving the bundled sidecar via a filesystem stat (no spawn) — the
same class of work the managed-shim check already performs. `buzz-agent`
can no longer report missing, even inside the boot warm window.
- New `discovery/bounded_command.rs` runs any discovery child under a
hard wall-clock deadline, polling with `try_wait` rather than blocking
on `wait()`. Stdout and stderr are piped to two drain threads whose
buffers share an aggregate `CAPTURE_LIMIT`; a breach fails closed (kill
the tree, return `None`), so a noisy or hostile probe can force neither
unbounded memory nor disk fill. Tree teardown runs on every exit path —
timeout, error, cap breach, *and* success — because a login-shell rc
file or auth CLI can legitimately background a descendant that would
otherwise outlive discovery. Ownership is deliberately asymmetric:
- **Unix:** the child leads its own process group (`process_group(0)`);
teardown is `SIGTERM` → bounded grace → `SIGKILL` on the group. A
descendant that leaves the group (`setsid`/`setpgid`) while holding a
pipe is not owned and may survive one probe, but can never hang or
unbound the helper: the Unix drains read nonblocking and end on
`WouldBlock` once teardown sets the stop flag, so the join returns
promptly without waiting on an escaped writer's EOF.
- **Windows:** the child is spawned `CREATE_SUSPENDED`, assigned to a
kill-on-close Job Object while frozen, then resumed. The job owns the
root before any descendant can exist and is created without breakaway,
so no writer can escape — a hard whole-tree guarantee, and closing the
job reaps the tree even after the root has exited. Any failure to
create, assign, or resume is fail-closed: the child is terminated and
reaped and the spawn returns `None` (discovery treats it as
command-not-found) rather than running unowned.
- Each login-shell candidate is bounded by a 10s timeout via that
helper, falling through to the next candidate on timeout instead of
aborting the resolve. The login-shell path cache is generation-aware: a
probe that loses to a concurrent refresh or lands mid-refresh returns
the authoritative cached value (or re-probes under the new generation)
rather than its own rejected local result, so a losing thread can never
settle the UI with a PATH-missing catalog while the cache holds a fresh
success.
- Warm the ACP runtime catalog once at `AppShell` mount and gate the
cheap-path surfaces on that pass. A module-level boot-warm state (`idle`
→ `pending` → `settled`/`failed`, deduped per launch) lets
`useAcpRuntimesQuery` present a cold catalog as *loading* while the
first forced pass runs and as a *retryable error* (carrying the probe's
real reason) if it fails, instead of blessing "every harness not
installed" as authoritative. A non-empty catalog always wins, so a
revalidation or later failure never blanks a good list; the gate only
overlays once the warm has started, so onboarding (which renders before
the warm) is unaffected. Deduping per launch also fixes the previous
per-remount re-fire.

## Verification

Unix teardown and the drain contract are runtime-proven by
`#[ignore]`-free tests that record a backgrounded descendant's real PID
and assert the helper returns promptly on both the success and timeout
paths without blocking on that writer. The generation-aware login-shell
cache is covered by deterministic tests through a `cfg(test)` injectable
probe seam that assert the function's return value under both
concurrent-refresh interleavings — the losing caller returns the peer's
committed success, and a mid-probe refresh forces a re-probe to the
fresh value. The Windows ownership contract has no CI lane, so
`bounded_command.rs` carries two `#[ignore]`-gated tests (spawn/assign
race, looped; and the timeout path) for a sanctioned run on a Windows
host. The boot-warm gate is covered by unit tests for the pure overlay
and the `startBootWarm` failure → retry → settle lifecycle.

a7c7414a7f feat(desktop): implement 30178 team catalog backend (#5112)
Implements the Rust/backend half of 30178 team catalog sharing on the
community catalog. No TS callers yet — this is PR 1 of 2;
[#3995](https://github.com/block/buzz/pull/3995) (stacked here) adds the
parse layer, hooks, `CommunityCatalogDialog`, and e2e tests.

## What this adds

**Projection builder** (`team_catalog.rs`):
`build_team_catalog_event/content` produces a 30178 event from a team +
member definitions. Size contracts: 192 KiB total ceiling, per-field
bounds (name 256 B, text 4 KiB, system-prompt 16 KiB, avatar URL 32 KiB
for projection fields; https URLs additionally validated at 2,048
bytes). Avatar handling: oversized raster data URLs downscaled to fit;
oversized built-in avatars silently omitted; oversized https URLs
rejected with a named error.

**Share/unshare/tombstone** (`commands/teams/pending.rs`):
`prepare_team_publication_at` retains a signed 30178 head for the flush
loop; share state is relay-scoped (one community can share while another
does not). `refresh_or_retract_shared_head_at` rebuilds or tombstones
the head immediately on team/member edit — no stale publication until
the next boot. Both the 30178 catalog and 30176 team tombstones are
signed with a `created_at` that strictly dominates the retained head's
(read inside the delete transaction), so a future-dated head cannot
survive its own deletion under the relay's `created_at <=` soft-delete
gate.

**Serialized-publisher share command** (`commands/teams/sharing.rs`,
`managed_agents/persona_events.rs`): `set_team_shared` publishes the
retained head through `flush_pending_events_at` rather than submitting
the prepared event directly. A direct submit ran outside
`managed_agents_store_lock` and raced `delete_team`: the delete
atomically purges the head's retained row and enqueues a newer 30178
tombstone in one transaction, and a delayed direct submit could land the
old shared head *after* that tombstone. Because 30178 replacement has no
deletion watermark, the deleted team would go publicly live again.
Routing through the flush is necessary but not sufficient, because the
flush is not itself a single publisher: several call sites (the 30s
sweep, this share toggle, managed-policy updates) invoke it
concurrently, and each invocation has an await gap between its per-row
re-read and its relay POST. A second flush could publish the tombstone
in that gap while an earlier flush's delayed POST lands the just-purged
head after it. The flush now acquires a per-scope publisher mutex —
keyed by the canonical retention `db_path`, which already *is* the
durable scope identity (hashed normalized relay URL + owner pubkey) —
and holds it across its entire invocation: snapshot, per-row re-read,
POST, and `mark_synced`. Serialized-per-scope flush ⟹ within one scope
the only interleavings are head-before-tombstone (the head lands first,
then is dominated by the later tombstone) or purged-row-skip (the delete
committed first, so the re-read skips the head) — a purged head can
never publish after its tombstone. The lock is a
`LazyLock<Mutex<HashMap<PathBuf, Arc<tokio::sync::Mutex<()>>>>>` static
rather than an `AppState` field: it keeps the invariant at its
acquisition site and out of the size-ratcheted `app_state.rs`
(precedent: `agent_models_databricks.rs`'s `AUTH_GATE`), and the
std-mutex map guard is released before the async guard is awaited so it
never spans an await point. Keying per scope — rather than one
process-global lock — means a stalled or hostile relay in one community
can no longer block publication in every other community, and each
per-row submit is additionally wrapped in a
`tokio::time::timeout(PUBLISH_TIMEOUT = 60s)`:
`submit_signed_event_at_with_keys` first waits on the process-wide
admission gate (up to 300s on a 429) and then POSTs on the app-wide
`http_client`, which leaves reqwest's connect/read/total timeouts unset,
so a relay that accepts the connection and never finishes the response
would otherwise pin the lock forever. A timeout takes the same
`Err`/`continue` path as a relay rejection — the row stays pending for
the next 30s sweep and a timed-out tombstone keeps its replacement
deferred this pass — so a live admission gate now surfaces as
timeout-pending rather than a held lock, the correct durable behavior
since the sweep retries. `publicationStatus` (Published/Queued) is
derived by re-reading the retained row's pending flag after the flush.
The previously-unused `relayMessage` field is dropped from
`SetTeamSharedResult`: the flush loop swallows every per-event relay
rejection to its own log and only surfaces local DB faults (which the
status re-read already propagates), so the field was permanently `null`
on this path. #3995's `tauriTeams.ts` mapping and `useTeamActions.ts`
log branch drop with it.

**Domination-aware flush** (`managed_agents/persona_events.rs`): a
strictly-dominating tombstone can be signed past the relay's ingest
acceptance window (`MAX_TIMESTAMP_DRIFT_SECS`, ±900s from server time).
Republishing such a byte-frozen event verbatim from the pending queue
lets it age out of the window and be rejected forever, stranding the
head live. The flush loop is now domination-aware for every retained
kind:5 (covering both 30176 and 30178). For a pending tombstone with
floor `f` (= the retained row's own `created_at`):

- `f <= now` → re-date and re-sign at `now` (mirrors the existing
archive-request re-sign branch; `mark_synced` stays keyed to the
untouched retained row, so a re-date can't mask a concurrent edit),
- `now < f <= now + 900` → publish verbatim at `f`, inside the window,
- `f > now + 900` → skip the sweep; the event stays pending and its
replacement keeps deferring (via `failed_tombstones`) so out-of-order
retraction remains impossible, converging as the wall clock advances.

No path emits an event the gate rejects, and a boundary reject
self-heals through the submit-error requeue. Durable across offline gaps
of any length.

**Atomic adopt** (`commands/teams/adopt/`): `add_team_from_catalog`
re-fetches and signature-verifies the head from the relay, then plans
and commits a multi-entity add across two store writes with byte-exact
rollback on any failure (crash window between writes explicitly
retained). `plan_add` resolves full member provenance (owner, d-tag,
member-key, projection-hash), reuses a recipient's own local built-in
only when the published slug matches and the reuse hint's
`projection_hash` — recomputed from the member's own embedded fields at
the parse boundary and rejected on mismatch — equals
(case-insensitively, matching the boundary's hex tolerance) the
recipient's local built-in hash, and reactivates deactivated copies on
re-add. Because the boundary already proves the hint hash describes the
reviewed projection, a publisher cannot pair a real built-in's slug +
hash with arbitrary reviewed fields to make adoption install the
recipient's built-in in place of what was shown. `commit_stores`
snapshots both stores before writing and restores them on failure. The
commit and the retention enqueue are sequenced inside
`commit_and_enqueue`, the sole route to a durable adoption commit: once
the store write succeeds it enqueues a pending 30175 for every member
copy the add wrote or reactivated and a pending 30176 for the team, so a
crash before the next boot reconcile cannot lose the only adopted copy.
A provenance match on an already-active copy is retained too (not just a
reactivation): a recovery retry after a crash between the persona write
and post-commit retention finds the copy active with no 30175 row, and
`plan_add` short-circuits once the team row exists, so this reuse branch
is the only place that retry can re-enqueue the orphaned member head.
Retaining unconditionally is conservative, not exact — an active copy
still referenced by a standalone managed agent can already hold a live
head, and re-retaining only bumps it monotonically; reused built-ins are
handled separately and never reach this branch. A byte-identical reused
built-in and an idempotent replay write nothing and enqueue nothing; a
failed commit propagates and enqueues nothing. Enqueue is best-effort
per row (the boot reconcile is the backstop). The frontend refreshes via
the `useAddTeamFromCatalogMutation` query invalidation in #3995, so no
`agents-data-changed` emit is needed here.

**Startup reconcile** (`event_sync.rs`):
`reconcile_team_catalog_heads_at` walks all retained 30178 heads at
boot: republishes heads whose content changed, tombstones heads whose
team or member was deleted, skips unshared heads and unchanged content.
Multi-team continuation — all shared teams processed in one pass.

**Cross-device catalog retention** (`commands/personas/inbound.rs`):
both recovery paths above — the boot reconcile worklist and the
interactive `refresh_or_retract_shared_head_at` — key off a retained
30178 row and guard-return without one. A second device therefore never
retained the owner's own catalog head published from another device, so
its later edit or delete could never supersede or retract that
discoverable head. The inbound reconcile now retains an inbound 30178
head as this device's publication witness through
`retain_inbound_catalog_witness`, a self-gating dispatcher invoked
unconditionally on the production non-deletion path: newest-wins via
`retain_inbound_event`, arrival-scoped, no local JSON store, and
deliberately **no** refresh or republish on arrival — a 30178 arrival is
either this device's own echo or the other device's publication, and
rebuilding on either would make two devices ping-pong identical heads.
Retention advances the witness and stops. The tombstone router accepts a
kind:5 covering a 30178 coordinate, so an inbound deletion purges the
retained head on the receiving device (the covered-head purge already
happens inside `commit_inbound_tombstone_with_store`; a 30178 head has
no local record to remove). After a successful inbound persona/team
upsert, this device refreshes the affected shared heads so the community
catalog tracks the inbound edit (persona edit → every team whose
resolved members include it, resolving the local persona `id` by d-tag;
team edit → that team's head); after an inbound tombstone, a team
deletion retracts its 30178 coordinate and a persona deletion refreshes
the teams that listed it. The refresh is idempotent across devices:
`refresh_or_retract_shared_head_at` skips the publish when the rebuilt
projection is byte-identical to the retained head and still shared, so
the editing device's own published head triggers no churn republish on
the receiving device.

**Executable-text concealment gate** (`team_catalog.rs`,
`definition_validation.rs`): `validate_team_catalog_content` — the
single chokepoint both the publish builder
(`build_team_catalog_content`) and the adopt parser
(`team_catalog_content_from_event`) funnel through — now rejects
invisible, default-ignorable, and bidirectional-override characters
(e.g. U+200B, U+2066, U+202E) in every field delivered verbatim to the
ACP harness or rendered as reviewed identity in the catalog UI. This is
the same invariant the persona catalog already enforces at its own parse
boundary (`persona_catalog::parse_agent`); the 30178 boundary was the
outlier. Member `display_name` + `system_prompt` go through
`validate_agent_definition_text` per member (exact parity with
`parse_agent`: display-name rule with no layout controls, prompt rule
allowing `\n`/`\t`); `name_pool` entries take the display-name rule
since they are minted verbatim as instance display names; team
`instructions` take the visible-text rule with layout controls allowed,
since they reach `BUZZ_ACP_TEAM_INSTRUCTIONS` multiline. The team `name`
takes the display-name rule (no layout controls) and the `description`
takes the visible-text rule with layout controls allowed, since both are
rendered verbatim in the catalog UI as reviewed identity.
`validate_visible_text` is exposed `pub(crate)` from
`definition_validation.rs` and re-exported via `managed_agents`. A
signed, shared, current head can no longer smuggle concealed control
characters into executable configuration or reviewed catalog text
through either the publish or the adopt path; emoji (VS16/ZWJ) names and
multiline instructions still pass.

**Types**: `TeamRecord` and `AgentDefinition` extended with `shared`,
`catalog_source`, `team_catalog_source` fields. All commands registered
in `lib.rs`.

## Tests

- `team_catalog/tests.rs`: projection, size contracts, member-key
stability, tombstone rollback, fixture matrix
- `adopt/tests.rs`: head verification, store planning, provenance,
rollback
- `team_catalog/tests/concealment.rs`: the chokepoint rejects
default-ignorable (U+200B) and bidi controls (U+2066, U+202E) in member
`display_name`, `system_prompt`, `name_pool`, team `instructions`, and
the team `name`/`description`, on both the publish and adopt paths; an
emoji-bearing display name and multiline instructions still pass, so no
legitimate team becomes unshareable
- `team_catalog/tests/reuse_hint.rs`: a member pairing a real built-in's
slug with that built-in's genuine `projection_hash` but carrying
unrelated reviewed fields is rejected at the parse boundary, so adoption
can never substitute the recipient's built-in for the reviewed
projection; an honestly-stamped built-in reuse hint (including an
uppercase form of its true hash) still passes the boundary. Removing the
boundary recompute lets the tampered member validate, proving the test
discriminates the substitution class
- `adopt/tests/reuse.rs`: `reusable_builtin` reuses a local built-in for
an exact-match hint (one record, no copy), reuses it just the same when
the genuine hash is uppercased (case-insensitive, matching the boundary
— one record, not two), and falls through to an authoritative embedded
copy when the hash does not match. Comparing the hash case-sensitively
turns the uppercase case red (two records instead of one reused)
- `adopt/tests/concealment.rs`: a signed, shared, current head carrying
a bidi override drives the `add_verified_team` sequence (verify+parse →
`plan_add` → `commit_and_enqueue`) through real temp stores and a real
retention scope, asserting the head is rejected AND the personas store,
teams store, and retention rows are all left byte-unchanged. Stripping
the concealment call at the chokepoint turns it red — the parse then
succeeds and both stores are written, proving the test discriminates a
validate-after-write regression, not just an error return
- `adopt/tests/retention.rs`: adoption drives `commit_and_enqueue`
through a spy commit + a real temp-dir retention scope and asserts
persisted pending rows — commits-then-enqueues (30175 per minted member
+ 30176 team), a failed commit enqueues nothing, an idempotent replay
skips both the commit and the enqueue, a reused built-in retains only
the team, a reactivated copy is re-retained, and a partial-commit crash
recovery (active member copy with no retention row, team row absent)
re-enqueues the orphaned member's 30175. Deleting the enqueue inside the
seam turns these red — the wiring, not just the helper, is protected
- `sharing/tests.rs`: publish/queue lifecycle plus three concurrency
gate tests. (a)
`concurrent_flushes_never_land_the_head_after_its_tombstone` prepares a
share, runs a concurrent delete's purge+tombstone, flushes the tombstone
to a recording relay, then releases the delayed share and asserts the
purged 30178 head is never published after its tombstone and no pending
row survives (removing the lock turns it red — the relay sees the
resurrected head after the tombstone). (b)
`a_stalled_scope_does_not_block_publication_in_another_scope` pins one
scope's flush mid-POST on a stalled relay and runs a second scope's
flush to completion, asserting it publishes without waiting
(re-globalizing the key turns it red). (c)
`a_stalled_relay_releases_the_publisher_lock_within_the_bound` proves a
never-completing POST returns within `PUBLISH_TIMEOUT`, leaves the row
pending, and releases the lock so a subsequent same-scope flush proceeds
(removing the timeout turns it red).
`test_relay_rejection_stays_durably_queued` asserts queued +
still-pending rather than a relay-message string, matching the
flush-routed contract where the rejection text is no longer surfaced
- `pending/tests.rs`: share/unshare/tombstone lifecycle, edit
refresh/retract, tombstone timestamp domination, typed outcomes,
cross-device catalog convergence — device B retains device A's inbound
head then supersedes it on a member edit and tombstones the coordinate
on a delete, a byte-identical rebuild is a no-op (`Noop`, `created_at`
untouched), and an inbound retention alone queues no outbound publish
(the no-ping-pong guard). Neutralizing the inbound retention leg turns
the supersede/tombstone regressions red — B stays blind (`Noop`, no
dominating tombstone) — proving they discriminate the load-bearing leg
- `catalog_reconcile_tests.rs`: a signed kind:30178 head is driven
through the real production entrypoint
`reconcile_inbound_persona_event_blocking` over a `MockRuntime`
`AppHandle` (retention scope resolved from the handle's `app_data_dir`
under an overridden `$HOME`/`$XDG_DATA_HOME`), asserting the arrival
witness is retained at the owner coordinate with `pending_sync=false`,
stored verbatim, and no outbound publish is queued. An early return for
`KIND_TEAM_CATALOG` immediately before the production
`retain_inbound_catalog_witness` invocation turns it red, proving the
seam under test is the production dispatch path and not a test-only shim
- `pending/tests/gate.rs`: flush driven through a stub relay that logs
every `POST /events` with its accept/reject status and enforces the real
±900s ingest gate, for both 30176 and 30178 — within-window
publish+dominate; beyond-window stays-pending with **zero POSTs** (the
gate never receives a rejectable event); and the delayed/offline-retry
case where a tombstone signed strictly past a then-future head has aged
more than 900s into the past, so flush must re-date to `now` to publish.
The reversal check — restore the byte-frozen replay in
`persona_events.rs` and the delayed-retry and zero-POST assertions go
red — is what proves the suite discriminates the fix from the rejected
implementation
- `teams/tests.rs`: 30176 tombstone timestamp domination and no-head
fallback
- `event_sync_team_catalog_tests.rs`: reconcile scenarios including
multi-head continuation
- 26 shared JSON parity fixtures
(`tests/fixtures/team_catalog_content/`) consumed by both this PR's Rust
tests and #3995's TS tests

## Durable ordering, deletion reconcile, and relay-contract alignment

The catalog paths above sit on the shared inbound/deletion retention
seam. This PR makes that seam's ordering structural rather than
conventional, adds a negative-side (deletion) counterpart to the
existing positive-side boot backstop, and aligns inbound resolution with
the relay's actual soft-delete and NIP-33 winner rules.

**Preflight-then-commit (`commit_inbound_with_store`,
`commands/personas/inbound.rs` + `retention.rs`).** A named primitive
runs the fallible store mutation first and advances the durable
retention head only on success; an event that loses preflight returns
`Skipped` without touching the store. The persona/team upsert arms and
the inbound kind:5 removal path all route through it, so no inbound arm
can advance the head ahead of the store write it represents. The
managed-agent arm keeps its own preflight (its runtime transition must
not run for a skipped event) and still advances the head only after
`save_managed_agents`.

**Atomic + monotonic tombstone helpers (30175 / 30176 / 30177).** The
three ordinary tombstone helpers (`commands/personas/pending.rs`,
`commands/agents_pending.rs`, `commands/teams/mod.rs`) each read the
prior head, sign, delete, and retain inside one `BEGIN IMMEDIATE`
transaction, and sign the kind:5 with a `created_at` that strictly
dominates the prior head (`monotonic_created_at(prior_head)`). This
mirrors the 30178 `tombstone_team_catalog_coordinate` precedent. The
three siblings deliberately duplicate the `BEGIN IMMEDIATE` shape rather
than sharing a helper this round — the shared-helper consolidation is
deferred to the persona-tombstone follow-up PR where the flush-replay
class already lives.

**Deletion reconcile (`event_sync.rs`, negative-side counterpart of the
positive-side boot backstop).** The positive side already reconstructs
missing retained heads at boot from surviving disk records. Deletion is
the asymmetric gap: an atomic tombstone helper preserves the head on
failure, but boot reconcile enumerated disk records — deletion already
removed them — so an orphan retained head was never tombstoned. The
deletion reconcile enumerates retained 30175/30176 heads and tombstones
only genuine orphans (a retained head with no matching disk record),
routing through the now-atomic helpers. It reconciles only against a
successfully parsed store: a truncated, malformed, or wrong-shape JSON
store fails loudly (never triggers a tombstone); a missing file is
treated as empty. Managed agents (30177) are excluded by design: their
inbound sync retains a head *without* minting a local disk record
(agents carry device-local secrets that can't come from a relay event),
so a retained 30177 head with no matching record is the normal
cross-device state for every agent created on another device — not a
lost deletion. Sweeping it would tombstone and archive another device's
live agents at boot. Agent deletion-retry therefore stays a pre-existing
gap owned by the direct delete path (tracked in Follow-ups).

**Inbound relay-contract alignment (`retention.rs`,
`commands/personas/inbound.rs`).** Two inbound rules now match the
relay:
- *Equal-second tie-break.* `inbound_event_outcome` previously treated
every equal timestamp as stale; the relay resolves equal `created_at` by
lowest event id. Preflight now matches the relay tuple — strictly newer
timestamp wins, equal timestamp resolves by lower event id, an exact
echo skips — so two devices authoring different same-second successors
converge instead of one silently republishing an event the relay
refuses.
- *Covered-head resolution on inbound kind:5.*
`reconcile_inbound_tombstone` previously consulted only the retained
kind:5 row, so a historical tombstone replayed after a newer recreation
deleted the recreated record and never purged the covered head.
Preflight now resolves both the tombstone row and the covered
`(target_kind, owner, d_tag)` head: a target head strictly newer than
the tombstone preserves JSON and skips; an actually-covered head is
removed from disk first (fallible), then the tombstone row commit and
covered-head purge happen atomically. A JSON-save failure advances
neither, so the identical event stays retryable.

**Atomic agent-archive coupling (`commands/agents_pending.rs`).** The
30177 tombstone and the 9035 archive request now enqueue in one `BEGIN
IMMEDIATE` transaction, with the archive's `persona_id` derived from the
retained head (`persona_id_from_head`) rather than the deleted record,
where it survives the tombstone as owner-signed historical alias data.
The standalone `archive_managed_agent_pending` production callers are
removed — there is no double-enqueue path. Unlike personas/teams, this
coupling is not re-enqueued by the boot deletion reconcile (30177 is
excluded, above): a crash after the disk-authoritative record is removed
but before this transaction commits leaves agent deletion-retry a
pre-existing gap owned by this direct delete path (tracked in
Follow-ups).

## Follow-ups

`publish_prepared_persona` (`commands/personas/sharing.rs`) has the
identical direct-submit-outside-the-lock race for 30175 persona heads
that this PR fixes for 30178 team heads. It predates this work and is
tracked in the separate persona-tombstone follow-up PR, not folded here.

The app-wide `http_client` leaves reqwest's connect/read/total timeouts
unset (`app_state.rs` builder configures only pool options). This PR
bounds the team-publish call site with a `tokio::time::timeout`, but
every other consumer of the shared client remains exposed to a
non-responding endpoint. A client-wide default timeout is the broader
fix; it is pre-existing on main and affects all consumers, so it is out
of scope here.

Managed-agent deletion-retry: the atomic 30177 tombstone + 9035 archive
is best-effort, and unlike personas/teams it is deliberately excluded
from the boot deletion reconcile (a device-local-absent 30177 head is
the normal cross-device state, not a deletion). A crash between the
delete's store write and its retention enqueue therefore has no boot
backstop for agents. The durable fix is a local deletion intent written
before the record is removed; deferred rather than folded into this
round.

bbd20fae75 perf(desktop): move five hot renderer paths from JS into Rust (#6024)
## Summary

Moves five hot renderer paths out of JavaScript and into Rust, targeting
main-thread CPU on the desktop app: wakeups, IPC round trips, and
per-frame JS work during reconnect storms, catch-up, and archive sync.

Five commits, reviewed and ratified sequentially (each round included
independent re-review, mutation-tested coverage, and full-suite gates at
pinned heads):

| Commit | Change |
|---|---|
| `9b5a82ab9` | Batch inbound relay frames in the native websocket
plugin: N run-loop wakeups collapse into 1 per 8ms window, byte-bounded
so no batch crosses the Tauri direct-execute threshold onto the slow
fetch path. NIP-42 AUTH bypasses the window. |
| `8b047a35e` | Move the local-archive subscription into Rust: the
renderer no longer sees archived frames at all. Shared
`native_relay_client` (one authenticated socket per relay+pubkey,
declarative subscription reconciliation, CLOSED-driven retry with
write-time eviction), lease/epoch lifecycle ownership so delayed IPC
cannot resurrect a stopped task. |
| `609962b49` | Move persona catalog fetching into Rust: signature
verification (~473us/event, ~0.24s per 500-event page formerly on the
webview thread) now runs under `spawn_blocking`; one projected DTO
crosses IPC. |
| `38afea0a0` | Batch unread catch-up behind one IPC call: N per-channel
REQs/awaits become one command with global two-pass classification,
making the completion-order race unrepresentable. Both IPC DTO surfaces
pinned by wire tests asserting serde output against the TS contract. |
| `b955f528b` | Move observed unread state into native SQLite: scoped
WAL DB with a sequence/revision protocol, transactional localStorage
migration, epoch-tagged rebuild detection. Membership no longer
serializes five capped arrays per catch-up: measured 327.4 KiB before,
0.2 KiB after at the same populated 5x1000 fixture. |

Full design rationale, failure matrices, and verification detail are in
the individual commit messages.

### Known behavior notes

- **Native migration is a one-way door per profile.** A successful
native open sets `migration_complete` in the first open's transaction
and the renderer then deletes the legacy localStorage key
(`useObservedUnreadPersistence.ts:290-294`,
`observed_unread.rs:420-442`). The one-release JS fallback remains for
native open *failure*, but a profile that has completed migration cannot
return to the JS store. Relevant if a rollback path is ever needed.
- **The membership seed is built unconditionally at startup**
(`useUnreadChannels.ts:245-250`), before any `isNative()` check. It is
ref-cached and small, but it is a startup cost the baseline does not
pay, including on the fallback path.

### Testing

**Current head is `9a8128ba4d2d695113505162be388fcec62cda0a`. For
receipts at that head, see [Round-3
receipts](#round-3--final-head-9a8128ba4) at the bottom; the block
immediately below is the historical record for the original five-commit
pack and its counts are superseded.**

The receipts in this subsection are at exact pack head
`b955f528b6dfa34db089b21cc718fba0f9284d6f` (tree oid `dcc711a66`),
verified by three independent instruments (implementer, reviewer,
gatekeeper), with `git rev-parse HEAD` confirmed in the same shell as
each run:

- `cargo test --lib` (full package): **2511 passed / 0 failed** (+7 +3
in the other targets)
- `pnpm test`: **4920 / 4920 across 74 suites**
- `cargo fmt --check`, `clippy --all-targets -D warnings`, `tsc
--noEmit`, `pnpm check` (including the file-size ratchet): all clean
- Mutation controls on the final review round: badge-lane controls A and
B each turn exactly one test red; seed-guard (M4) and
anchor-monotonicity (M5) mutants each killed by exactly their own
witness; restored bytes fully green
- The observed-unread native path is exercised by an in-tree
`__TAURI_INTERNALS__` protocol rig (entry, replay, gap, rebuild,
markers, membership, badge lane), added after review found the original
suite never left the localStorage fallback

**Open gates, stated plainly (status as of head `9a8128ba4`):**

- **Paired CPU benchmark still not run.** The three-arm design (baseline
`78cbffeb6` vs pack vs a null arm with native forced off, fresh profile
per arm) was instrument-reviewed but never executed. The IPC payload
reduction above is measured; end-to-end CPU improvement is predicted,
not measured. This gate is unchanged since `b955f528b`.
- **Live-local gate at the final head: GREEN at `9a8128ba4`.** A real
native Tauri live-local pass per `TESTING.md` was run at this exact
head. Receipts:
`.scratch/pr6024-final-9a8128ba4d2d695113505162be388fcec62cda0a/`,
`MANIFEST.txt` `start_utc=2026-08-17T21:58:07Z`, `FINAL_ATTESTATION.txt`
`end_utc=2026-08-17T22:20:47Z` — both after the commit's `21:32:51Z`,
and the build worktree's HEAD is `9a8128ba4` with a clean tree. **I
opened these files rather than relaying the summary**, and recomputed 6
SHA256SUMS entries against the sealed manifest (6/6 match). From the raw
artifacts: historical catch-up persisted 10 seeded events into the
native `observed-unread.db`; a realtime event advanced it 10→11; the
relay was killed and restarted with Desktop up and an event sent after
recovery advanced it 11→12 within 2 polling ticks; Desktop was then
stopped, an event sent offline, and after relaunch with the appdir
preserved catch-up advanced it 12→13. `relay.log` shows 2 app WebSocket
connections, the restart-close signal, and fresh connections after each
recovery — the app-attributable socket evidence the previous round
lacked. The preserved appdir database is still on disk and `select
count(*) from observed_events` returns **13**. The ignored real-relay
archive wire test passed **1/1** at this head. This exercises the
`lib.rs` / `e2eBridge.ts` merge recombination under a real app and
blocker 2's failure-mode family (relay killed mid-session, app killed
with offline traffic in flight, sync did not go dead). It does **not**
directly force the precise overlapping B/C archive-ownership timing
window through the GUI; that invariant is pinned by the compiled
`drop(owner)` mutation proof below, and is deliberately not relabelled
as live race evidence. **Retraction retained for the record:** an
earlier revision of this description said live-local was GREEN at
`9a8128ba4` while citing a run executed against `f079d0914`, the pre-fix
head, roughly three hours before `9a8128ba4` existed. That claim was
false and was corrected before this run existed. The GREEN above rests
on the new receipts only.
- **Workspace-wide `cargo test --workspace` is red on `main`, not on
this PR.** The exact-head live run's workspace logs contain honest
`rc=101` results. All are in crates this PR does not touch: `git diff
origin/main...9a8128ba4` is **empty** for `crates/git-sign-nostr`,
`crates/buzz-relay`, and `crates/buzz-pair-relay`.
`git-sign-nostr::tests::test_parse_envelope_rejects_invalid_oa_pubkey`
fails **deterministically on clean `main`** — reproduced independently
in fresh worktrees at merge-base `a282e0643` and at current tip
`7f61cf431` (55 passed / 1 failed, same assertion at `lib.rs:2136`).
Root cause: `nostr` 0.36→0.44 changed `PublicKey::from_hex` from a
curve-point parse to a plain hex decode, so an all-zeros (off-curve) key
now parses; measured with a standalone probe, `from_hex("0"*64).is_ok()`
is `false` on 0.36.0 and `true` on 0.44.7. Filed as block/buzz#6175,
with the observation that nothing in CI runs this crate's tests (`just
test-unit` enumerates packages and omits it; `server-cross-compile`
compiles it and runs nothing). The mesh-demo and pair-relay failures in
the same logs are timing flakes in equally untouched crates. **None of
these gate this PR.**
- **Full smoke + integration: GREEN at `9a8128ba4`.** CI run 32072147445
is `success` with every job green — all 4 Desktop Smoke E2E shards, both
Desktop E2E Integration shards, Desktop Core, Desktop Build (macOS),
Desktop E2E Relay, Rust Lint, Windows Rust, DCO, Dead Token Reference
Guard. Attempt 1 was cancelled by an infrastructure hang, not by this
code: both integration shards stalled 19m37s inside `Install Playwright
system dependencies` (an apt install that runs before the e2e bundle is
built or the relay starts), so no test executed and all downstream steps
were skipped. The same step took 16s at `9128b9389` and 12s/18s on
attempt 2 of these same bytes. Attempt 2 was a job rerun, not a push;
the head is unchanged.

## Review round 2 — head `9128b9389`

Carl's review
[4953970089](https://github.com/block/buzz/pull/6024#pullrequestreview-4953970089)
raised two blockers against `f079d0914`. Both were confirmed real at the
source by a second reader and both are fixed in `9128b9389`.

**Blocker 1 — recovery dropped the mutation whose ingest failed.** Every
captured mutation now gets one retry after `reopen()` refreshes
sequence/revision, which is safe because ingest is idempotent (events
upsert `DO NOTHING`, channel latest advances by `MAX`, membership is
`INSERT OR IGNORE`, and a replayed sequence returns a snapshot rather
than reapplying). `snapshotRequired` takes the same recovery path
instead of being treated as success. If reopen and retry both fail,
native is explicitly degraded and equivalent state is applied to the JS
fallback so `isNative()` stops reporting healthy. Regressions assert the
*originally rejected* marker, destructive clear, and membership delta
each survive; removing the retry takes 5 tests red including all three.

**Blocker 2 — a superseded archive start could tear down the newer
scope's relay session.** `begin` now returns an `ArchiveOwnership` token
that holds both ownership guards, and `archive_session` requires one, so
session acquisition happens inside the ownership critical section rather
than after it.

### Deviation from the requested regression test for blocker 2

Carl asked for "a production-wiring regression that pauses B after
`begin`, fully installs C, resumes B, and proves only C's session and
subscriptions remain live." **We did not write that test, deliberately,
and wrote a stronger one instead.**

Under this fix that scenario is unreachable by construction. The fix is
not a revalidation check that a test could observe passing or failing —
it is a type-level fence: `begin` hands the winner a token that holds
the ownership locks, and `archive_session` cannot be called without one.
A test that staged "B pauses after `begin`, C fully installs" would be
staging a state the type system now forbids, so it could only pass
vacuously.

Two things close the blocker, and only one of them is a test:

1. *A superseded start cannot reach `archive_session` at all.* Enforced
by the compiler, not by a test. `ArchiveOwnership` is un-constructible
outside `archive::sync`. Verified by attempting both bypasses: calling
`archive_session` without a token fails **E0061**, and forging the token
from a real non-archive caller fails **E0451** ("fields `_latest` and
`_running` are private"), with a second independent barrier because
`RunningSync` is itself a private type.
2. *While an owner holds the token, no newer start can claim.* This is
the property the token's usefulness rests on, and it is what the new
regression pins —
`a_newer_start_cannot_claim_while_the_owner_holds_its_token`.

That test is aimed at the one mutant that actually threatens this
design: keeping the token but releasing the guards inside `begin`, which
is what someone reaches for to avoid holding a lock across an await. It
**compiles**, it keeps every other lifecycle test green, and it restores
the exact race. Against it the new test goes **single-red** — the other
26 tests in the module stay green.

Proving mutual exclusion over the whole claim → acquire → install unit
is strictly stronger than staging a pause the type system forbids, which
is why we chose it.

Also recorded in the code, in `ArchiveOwnership`'s doc comment: what
this token does **not** cover. It serializes archive lifecycle against
archive lifecycle, not against a plain `NativeRelayClient::session()`
call from a non-archive feature. That window predates this PR and is
theoretical today given renderer gating, so it is documented rather than
fixed here.

### Round-2 receipts at `9128b9389`

- `cargo test --lib`: **2513 passed / 0 failed**
- `pnpm test`: **4926 / 4926**
- `cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings`, `cargo fmt --check`, `pnpm
check`: rc 0
- Merged against `origin/main` in a scratch worktree (clean, zero
conflicts) and re-gated on that merged tree: **2544** Rust / **4956**
frontend, both 0 failed

---

## Round 3 — final head `9a8128ba4`

`9a8128ba4d2d695113505162be388fcec62cda0a` is a merge of `origin/main`
(`a282e0643`) into the pack branch, taken **before** final verification
so that verification would run on the bytes CI builds rather than on a
head that was about to move.

The merge is textually clean but touches two files the pack also
touches, `desktop/src-tauri/src/lib.rs` and
`desktop/src/testing/e2eBridge.ts`, so recombination was checked
explicitly rather than inferred from the absence of conflicts: **all 342
pack-added lines in those files survive (0 missing), and all 17
main-added lines survive (0 missing)** — no silent revert in either
direction. Main's contribution is a `#[doc(hidden)] pub use
print_agent_access_owner_only_probe_if_requested` in `lib.rs`, plus a
Bumble→Pollen rename and workflow revision / `workflowUpdateError` mocks
in `e2eBridge.ts`.

### Receipts at `9a8128ba4`

Implementer, in a shell with `git rev-parse HEAD` confirmed at this SHA:

- `cargo test --lib` (full package): **2544 passed / 0 failed** / 18
ignored
- `pnpm test`: **4956 / 4956** across 74 suites
- `cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings`, `cargo fmt --check`, `pnpm
check`: rc 0
- The 4 remaining `pnpm check` findings (`channelMutesStorage.test.mjs`,
`channelStarsStorage.test.mjs`, `terminal.css`,
`empty-edit-delete.spec.ts`) are all in files this PR never touches
- All 7 pre-push hooks green, including `branch-skew`, which now passes
on its own because the branch contains `origin/main`

Independent reviewer, same exact head, own instruments:

- `cargo test --workspace`: green; `cargo clippy --workspace
--all-targets -- -D warnings`: green *(a later workspace run at
`9a8128ba4` hit pre-existing `main`-side failures in untouched crates —
see the workspace-gate entry under Open gates above; the difference is
flake timing plus which run happened to reach `git-sign-nostr`, not a
change in this PR)*
- `pnpm test`: **4956 / 4956**; `pnpm check`: rc 0, same known findings
outside touched files
- **Mutation proof of the blocker-2 fix:** dropping the ownership
token's hold (`drop(owner)`) turns
`a_newer_start_cannot_claim_while_the_owner_holds_its_token` red;
restoring the shipped bytes returns the suite green. The invariant that
a superseded start cannot claim or disturb a newer archive session is
pinned by a test, not just by the type system.
- **Live-local at this exact head: attested and verified.** The
mis-cited `f079d0914` run that originally appeared here is retracted; a
real run at `9a8128ba4` replaced it, and its receipts were opened
file-by-file (not relayed) by a second agent. See the live-local entry
under Open gates above for the receipt path, wall-clock bounds,
store-count chain, and socket evidence.
- Verdict: minimalness **9/10**, elegance **9/10**, correctness
**9.5/10**. **Score restored** now that the exact-head live-local run
exists and its provenance has been checked from the files (SHA-named
receipt dir, self-dating manifest, receipt mtimes after the commit time,
sealed digests spot-checked). Gatekeeper re-bless at `9a8128ba4`:
**9/10, merge recommended.**

The paired CPU benchmark remains the one gate not run. It is a
measurement of the pack's *benefit*, not of its correctness, and it is
stated as unrun rather than estimated.

240cdd3ea1 chore: mesh upgrade, clean up legacy special case code, simplify model selection for mesh (#5289)
Shared compute now has exactly two model choices: MeshLLM's virtual
`mesh`
model, or a model you name. Buzz picks between them in one place, and
buzz-agent no longer knows meshes exist.

## What changed

- **MeshLLM v0.74.0 → v0.75.1.** v0.75.0 added
`degrade_to_single_model`, so a
`model=mesh` request is answered by one served model when there is no
committee to form, instead of failing. v0.75.1 adds Mesh-LLM#1196, which
skips stale pre-0.75 runtime cache entries rather than aborting startup
on
them — without it, anyone who had run mesh on 0.73/0.74 could not start.
- **Deleted the client-side mesh catalog probe.** buzz-agent used to
poll
`/v1/models` (5s TTL, 30s cooldown, two-observation debounce) to decide
whether `mesh` was safe to send. MeshLLM now decides per request, so the
polling, its hysteresis, and its 503 fallback are gone.
- **One mapping point.** `relay_mesh_wire_model()` turns the stored
value into
a wire name: `auto` becomes `mesh`, a named model passes through. The
spawn
env, the ACP harness, and the readiness probe all use it, so they cannot
disagree — previously `BUZZ_ACP_MODEL` and the probe both said `auto`, a
name
  the mesh does not advertise.
- **Removed the `nostr-relay-pool` advisory exception.** #5404 allowed
RUSTSEC-2026-0243 "after mesh-llm migrates to nostr-sdk >= 0.45".
v0.75.1
does, so the retired crate is gone from both lockfiles and the exception
would only mask a future advisory for it.
- **Deleted `scripts/ensure-mesh-native-runtime.sh`** and its six
justfile call
sites. It built llama.cpp from source into the runtime cache; the app
already
downloads the signed release runtime itself, and CI never called it.

## Why it is better

**−639 lines of Rust.** Availability is decided by the node that knows
the
answer, per request, instead of by a client cache that could be stale
for up to
30 seconds. A second worker joining now takes effect on the next request
rather
than after two confirming probes.

## Behaviour change

A 503 on an explicit `mesh` request takes the ordinary transport retry
under
the same model instead of failing over to a second one — there is no
second
model to fail over to now. MoA repairs partial committee results
internally
before it reaches that point.

## Validation

`crates/buzz-relay/examples/mesh_agent_e2e.rs` now sends `mesh` where it
previously sent `auto` or the physical model id, so no leg was covering
what
Buzz actually puts on the wire. 4/4 on gemma-4-E4B, gemma-4-26B-A4B, and
Qwen3-8B — including a real ACP tool call through `mesh` into
buzz-dev-mcp,
asserted by reading the written file back off disk.

Hand-tested in the desktop app on both gemma-4 sizes: picked Auto, agent
logged
`model_id=mesh`, replied in channel.

## Not covered

A committee that forms and then loses a worker returns 502, and that
needs two
workers to reproduce — not testable on one machine.

7eb8cc5a5f fix(link-preview): resolve YouTube videos through oEmbed (#5520)
**Category:** fix
**User Impact:** YouTube video links now resolve into reliable previews
instead of intermittently appearing as bare links.

**Problem:** Buzz intentionally reads at most **256 KiB** of page HTML
when building a generic link preview. The YouTube response that exposed
this bug was roughly **1.3 MiB**, with its Open Graph metadata beginning
around **686 KiB**—well beyond Buzz's bounded read—so extraction
returned no usable preview. YouTube can move that metadata between
responses, which explains why the same link may appear to work in one
build or request and fail in another; raising the generic cap would
increase bandwidth and allocation for every site while still scraping an
unstable application document.

**Solution:** Route recognized YouTube video URLs through YouTube's
structured oEmbed endpoint instead of parsing raw watch-page HTML. The
provider response is capped at **64 KiB** and retains Buzz's existing
HTTPS validation, pinned DNS/SSRF protection, disabled redirects,
timeouts, metadata bounds, and thumbnail sanitization. Provider failures
return no preview rather than falling back to fragile HTML scraping, and
embed URLs are canonicalized safely, including percent-encoded video
IDs.

<details>
<summary>File changes</summary>

**desktop/src-tauri/src/commands/link_preview.rs**
Recognizes supported YouTube URL forms, fetches bounded JSON metadata
from YouTube oEmbed, canonicalizes embed links, and adds response,
URL-boundary, malformed-data, resource-limit, and encoded-ID
regressions.

**desktop/src-tauri/Cargo.toml**
Declares percent decoding as a direct desktop dependency for safe
embed-ID canonicalization.

**desktop/src-tauri/Cargo.lock**
Records the direct dependency in the desktop package lock entry.

</details>

## Reproduction Steps

1. On the base branch, paste a YouTube URL whose Open Graph metadata
falls beyond the first 256 KiB of the raw watch-page response and
observe that no preview is produced.
2. Run this branch and paste a YouTube watch, mobile, music, `youtu.be`,
Shorts, live, or embed URL into the composer.
3. Confirm the preview resolves with the video's title, creator, and
sanitized thumbnail without downloading the full watch-page HTML.
4. Try an embed URL with a percent-encoded ID, such as
`https://www.youtube.com/embed/%64Qw4w9WgXcQ`, and confirm it resolves
to the same video.
5. Try a YouTube lookalike domain or an embed ID containing encoded
separators and confirm it is not routed through the provider path.

7334ad1e16 fix(desktop): route macos notification clicks (#4799)
## Summary
- deliver macOS notifications through `UNUserNotificationCenter`
- route notification clicks to the referenced channel or thread through
the existing frontend activation path
- preserve click targets across cold startup and frontend remounts with
a small process-wide activation queue
- keep Linux notification activation behavior unchanged

## Architecture
A single `UNUserNotificationCenterDelegate` is installed during Tauri
setup. Each notification stores its navigation target in `userInfo`. On
click, Rust queues the target before emitting a wake-up event; the
frontend atomically drains the queue and dispatches the existing
notification action. The queue is the source of truth, which prevents
cold-start loss and duplicate delivery.

## Validation
Verified at `a81241611d617becf7640bee6fe56b5cdb4d0fab`:
- Biome format/check and lint
- TypeScript typecheck
- repository and desktop-Tauri `cargo fmt --check`
- repository and desktop-Tauri Clippy with `-D warnings`
- full pre-push desktop tests and Tauri workspace checks/tests
- desktop production build

Manual macOS validation passed: after explicitly ad-hoc signing the
local bundle with `xyz.block.buzz.app`, the operator confirmed real
Notification Center delivery and click navigation.

631b05c883 feat: ship Buzz Term (#4347)
## Summary

- ship **Buzz Term** end to end: the terminal engine/runtime, mounted
desktop substrate, and user-visible naming
- add Quinn's tape-deck-inspired banner: a beveled chassis filled by the
`buzz term` wordmark, surrounded by a complete-hex field
- derive the wordmark's three-stop sweep from each theme's terminal
palette so primary, secondary, and accent roles remain visibly distinct
across all 62 shipped themes, including light themes
- paint the banner once on its own pointer-transparent canvas; PTY
rendering beneath it remains unchanged

## Banner behavior

- uses the renderer's shared `8.4 × 17` cell metrics and production
aspect ratio `2.0238`
- regenerates only for viewport/theme changes; palette switches repaint
correctly while the banner is visible
- dismisses on non-empty output from the active terminal session; empty
output and inactive sessions do not dismiss it
- fails closed below **70 columns** rather than squeezing or clipping
the wordmark
- adds **8 lines** to `terminalRenderer.ts` for shared cell metrics and
**zero lines inside `paint()`**

- desktop tests: **3,946 / 3,946**
- TypeScript: clean
- checks: pass (two pre-existing informational `useTemplate` notices
only)
- integration/e2e: PASS (independent exact-SHA lane; artifacts recorded

- artifact/dead-path sweep: clean
- redteam G1–G7: PASS
  - all six named banner emitter-deletion mutants die
- independent handwritten five-row full-wordmark fixture kills Quinn's
seven-mutant battery, including a one-pixel glyph change
- real `112 × 46` canvas-rect dismissal tests separately cover active
non-empty, active empty, and inactive non-empty output
- layer-drop and zero-draw painter mutants die; z-order and
pointer-events verified
  - CI's `tsc && vite build` includes all three banner modules
- performance at DPR 2 (worst-case measured envelope):
- one-time content paint: **~0.7–0.8 ms**, paid only when the banner is
built or its palette changes
- busy compositor, CSS `1277 × 697`, backing `2554 × 1394`: **470–497
µs/frame** for the full banner (**2.82–2.98%** of a 60 Hz frame)
- busy compositor, CSS `1920 × 1080`, backing `3840 × 2160`:
**1,139–1,212 µs/frame** (**6.83–7.27%**)
- empty, one-glyph, and full-banner controls converge: compositor cost
follows backing-layer area and DPR rather than painted-cell count
- in the actual idle welcome state, cost is below both vsync-clamped
rigs' resolution; it is not claimed as zero
- **Pane cross-rig spread: resolved at matched loop rate.** Two
independent rigs initially differed 2.3× (58–68 vs 136 µs/Mpx of backing
store; pane, CSS 1277×697 / backing 2554×1394, DPR 2). The cause of
*that* spread is rAF loop rate: the higher figure came from a
free-running loop at ~1600fps. Throttled to ~200–236fps, both rigs read
58–68 µs/Mpx (1.25–1.44% of a 60Hz frame). The busy-composite figures
quoted above remain the **unthrottled worst case** and are conservative
by ~2.3× at the pane. Not established: the mechanism and sign of
free-running distortion (one rig under-charges ~15%, the other
over-charges 2.3×), and the 1080p figure has not been re-measured
throttled.
- the layer paints only on generation/theme/resize and dismisses on
first non-empty active-session output, so the measurable busy cost is a
short-lived worst case rather than a persistent PTY paint-path tax

## Follow-ups in this PR

These are intentionally subsequent commits after the certified
static-banner head, not claims about `98ebc8f90`:

1. close the compositor metrology: remeasure the 1080p point throttled
and characterize the opposite-sign free-running rAF distortion, with
each measurement regime stated
2. add Tyler's animated honeycomb color waves, gated by
`prefers-reduced-motion`, a full 62-theme phase-sweep contrast check,
and DPR-2 per-tick performance certification
3. land the already-proven mounted theme-switch regression probe from
`RESEARCH/BUZZ_TERM_G3A_PROBE/`
4. bound the slow/hang-shaped G1-c mutant `waitFor`
5. optionally trim the generator to its ink bounding box, reducing the
minimum viewport from 70 to 62 columns

651f637275 chore(release): release Buzz Desktop version 0.5.4 (#4562)
## Buzz Desktop release v0.5.4

- **Frozen main:** `6de85fe31d781122756aecf954bae7d357a56b9a`
- **Reviewed candidate:** `5836cb8f0af478ed3ee3bc6464a20fa4cc91303f`
- **Previous desktop release:** `desktop-v0.5.3`
- **Proposed immutable tag:** `desktop-v0.5.4`

This PR must be **squash merged** only after the Desktop Release
Candidate check passes. The branch must remain based directly on current
`main`; stale base, payload drift, incomplete notes, or an unauthorized
merge produce no tag.

The checked-in changelog accounts for every non-merge commit in the
release range. Publication remains bound to the immutable candidate tag.

f86cfc7369 fix(desktop): back/forward via keyboard chords, mouse X1/X2 buttons, and swipe gestures (#3778)
## Problem

Two related gaps in global back/forward navigation. Fixes #3775.

1. The keyboard shortcuts almost never fire in real use — users fall
back to clicking the toolbar chevrons and assume the shortcuts don't
exist.
2. On macOS, mouse back/forward buttons (X1/X2) and horizontal swipe
gestures do nothing, although they navigate in every browser and in
Slack.

**Duplicate check:** searched open PRs and issues — none found beyond
#3775 (filed alongside this fix). #3078 / #3377 are
next/previous-*channel* navigation, a different feature.

## Root causes

**Keyboard:** `useBackForwardControls`'s keydown handler bailed whenever
the event target was editable — but `useComposerAutofocus` deliberately
focuses the message composer (a ProseMirror contenteditable) on mount
and on every channel switch. In steady state focus almost always lives
in the composer, so the chords were silently swallowed. Invisible to CI
because `navigation.spec.ts` only ever clicked the `global-back` /
`global-forward` buttons, never pressed the keys.

**Mouse/swipe:** on macOS, WKWebView never delivers X1/X2 button events
or swipe gestures to the page (Safari handles them natively in the app
layer, not in page JS), and Buzz had no native handler.

## Fix

### Keyboard chords (web layer)

Match the existing platform chord regardless of the event target and
drop the editable-target guard:

- `⌘[` / `⌘]` have no text-editing semantics in macOS text fields, and
the TipTap/StarterKit editor config binds no `Mod-[` / `Mod-]` shortcuts
(checked `useRichTextEditor.ts` — list indentation is Tab/Shift-Tab).
- `preventDefault()` keeps the chord out of the editor — asserted in the
e2e test.

This matches browsers and Slack, where back/forward chords work while a
text field is focused. Chord matching is extracted into a pure helper,
`app/navigation/backForwardChords.ts`, so it can be unit tested;
behavior (bindings, modifier exclusivity, `code`-based matching for
non-US layouts) is unchanged.

### macOS mouse buttons and swipe gestures (native layer)

An NSEvent local monitor in `mouse_nav.rs` catches what the webview
can't see and emits a `mouse-nav` Tauri event to the main window
(`emit_to`, so navigation stays scoped if multi-window ever lands) that
the frontend acts on. Two AppKit event shapes map to navigation:

- `otherMouseUp` with button 3/4 — mice whose X1/X2 buttons arrive as
plain button events. These are swallowed after emitting so nothing
downstream double-handles them.
- `swipe` with a horizontal delta — AppKit's page-swipe gesture
(`swipeWithEvent:`): `deltaX > 0` back, `deltaX < 0` forward. Sent by
mouse drivers that synthesize a page-swipe gesture for the back/forward
buttons instead of button-3/4 events (the hardware this was verified
on). Stock Apple trackpad and Magic Mouse swipes arrive as phased
scroll-wheel events instead, which this PR does not handle — that path
(`ScrollWheel` + `trackSwipeEventWithOptions:`, which also needs
scroll-edge detection) is deferred to a follow-up. Swipes are passed
through (swallowing mid-gesture events could confuse AppKit gesture
tracking).

The swipe path was verified end to end on hardware whose back/forward
buttons emit only swipe gestures, never button-3/4 events — an
instrumented event monitor confirmed the events arrive as
`NSEventType::Swipe` with `deltaX ±1`, and navigation worked after
mapping them.

## Tests

- **13 unit tests** for the web-side chord matcher
(`backForwardChords.test.mjs`): supported chords, modifier exclusivity,
`code` fallback, and preservation of line-editing shortcuts.
- **6 Rust unit tests** for the native mapping helpers (`mouse_nav.rs`):
button 3/4 directions, other buttons ignored, swipe delta sign →
direction, zero-delta (gesture-begin) ignored.
- **e2e regression case** in `navigation.spec.ts`: presses the platform
chord *while the composer is focused* — the missing coverage. Verified
it fails against the pre-fix implementation and passes with the fix.
- Full desktop unit suite: 3832/3832 pass. Full Rust suite (`cargo
test`, buzz-desktop): 1888 passed / 0 failed. `pnpm typecheck`, `biome
check`, `pnpm check`, `cargo fmt --check`, `cargo clippy`: clean (no new
warnings).
- Full Playwright e2e: 958 passed; 6 failures are relay-infrastructure
tests (live relay seeding / relay state seam) that fail identically
without this change — `navigation.spec.ts` is fully green.

## Manual test

1. Open a channel, then another (composer autofocuses on each switch).
2. `⌘[` — returns to the previous channel; `⌘]` — forward again. Typing
`[` / `]` in the composer inserts normally.
3. Mouse back/forward buttons navigate the same way, from anywhere in
the window (verified on macOS on hardware using both event shapes).

## Update — 2026-07-31

Removed the redundant DOM mouse-button handler after verifying it was
unnecessary. The native macOS path remains unchanged and was revalidated
manually.

6530b58a61 feat(k8s): Kubernetes backend plugin + desktop deploy path (#4289)
# Kubernetes backend plugin (crates/buzz-backend-kubernetes) + desktop
deploy path

Implements docs/remote-agents.md (merged @ 28ae6cd21) as ONE PR: the
provider
binary, the desktop changes that make it work, the harness inactivity
reaper,
the Sprig image, and the conformance/live-test suites.

Channel: buzz-remote-agents (29414326-dba7-402d-b384-b1b34d63a2e6),
thread c42b70ef.

## What's here (by lane)
- **crates/buzz-backend-kubernetes** (Dawn): stdin/stdout JSON provider,
info +
  deploy; pure classify.rs (one match arm per spec state-machine row);
reconcile/GC with ownership-marker gate + same-clock orphan check;
per-attempt
immutable Secrets; three-tier env with clear-then-write authoritative
tier.
- **Desktop** (Mari): KD3 launch block from resolved descriptor, KD5
pre-secret
negotiation gate (resolve-once → stage-and-digest → info → protocol gate
→
deploy), KD1 Windows extension strip, bundling (externalBin + Justfile +
release/canary workflows + stub loops), tauri.windows.conf.json platform
override (Decision B: no Windows artifact).
- **buzz-acp** (Max): KD4 BUZZ_ACP_EXIT_AFTER_INACTIVITY reaper
(pool-independent;
reset only at accepted dispatch; in-flight turn/heartbeat defers, never
resets);
BUZZ_ACP_EXIT_AFTER_INACTIVITY + BUZZ_ACP_NO_PRESENCE reserved. KD8 fix.
- **Image + tests** (Perci): Dockerfile.sprig (digest-pinned bases, exec
buzz-acp
PID 1, relay-scoped credential config), image contract script, provider
conformance suites (golden wire fixtures shared with desktop tests),
live-local
  runbook (namespace-scoped, shared-cluster safe).
- **Docs** (Sami, first commit): citation re-pin c1bca1b56 → 28ae6cd21
(44/49
were already byte-exact; 3 offsets fixed) + I3 presence-bound correction
(below).

## Named spec deviations (deliberate, each with rationale)
1. **No baked default image yet.** ghcr.io/block/buzz-sprig is
unpublished
(verified: anonymous pull 403 vs control 200). Omitted `image` returns
an
   in-band field-required error instead of a default.
2. **Image override STRICTER than spec §Image:** digest-only
(`name@sha256:<64hex>`); ALL tags rejected; `name:tag@digest`
normalized.
With no baked default the override is the only path, so tag-acceptance
would
make mutability the v1 norm. Strictness is reversible; a moved tag under
an
nsec is not. Baked digest default + tag re-acceptance = follow-up with
image
   publish.
3. **imagePullSecrets not in schema (v1).** Explicit user images may
rely on
namespace-preprovisioned pull credentials — the substrate boundary.
Field
added only if the publish decision proves it necessary. 9-field budget
intact.
4. **Decision A closed: writable empty workspace.** Nest projection =
named
   follow-up; no image-side scaffolding.
5. **Decision D overridden by Tyler (event b55398d8):** provider ships
bundled
with the desktop like buzz-acp/buzz-agent; spec §Distribution's separate
   release workflow deleted for v1.
6. **I3/vision presence bound corrected 90s → 180s.** PRESENCE_TTL_SECS
moved in
#3783 during this spec's base→merge window; the number was inherited,
not
chosen. Spec :206/:216/:928 + inline quote + VISION_REMOTE_AGENTS.md:59
corrected. ← Tyler: the vision is your document; this edit is flagged
for
   your explicit eyes.
7. **Spec citations are pinned to 28ae6cd21** (main at spec merge) and
resolve
there, not at this PR's head — this PR's own lanes move
crates/buzz-acp/src/lib.rs by ~100 lines (19 citations across
KD4/KD6/KD7/
§Stop/§Launch data). Known Defects rows fixed BY this PR retire on
merge;
the section documents main as of the pin.
8. **KD7 grace tension declared:** pod terminationGracePeriodSeconds=60
vs
KD7's measured ~87s shutdown tail at parallelism 10 (~197s at cap 32).
KD7 is ruled out of scope, so L1-3's "enough grace for full graceful
shutdown" is NOT met at default config — deliberate, resolved by the KD7
   follow-up, not silently.

## Question for Tyler
Will ghcr.io/block/buzz-sprig publish PUBLIC? If private-by-policy,
§Image needs
an imagePullSecrets story before the baked-default follow-up can land.

## Out of scope (named follow-ups)
KD6 exit-code contract + KD7 shutdown budget (gate OnFailure), OnFailure
restart
policy, Windows provider binary, PVCs/nest projection, mesh
deployability,
sprig image publish workflow + baked multi-arch digest default.

## Reproduce locally (four traps that cost us real time)

**1. Git hooks inherit the invoking shell's PATH — pin the shell, not
just your
verification commands.** `rust-toolchain.toml` pins `1.95.0`, but the
rustup shim
that honors that pin lives in `~/.cargo/bin`. If Homebrew's cargo is
earlier on
PATH, `cargo` in this repo is 1.89.0, which cannot build the workspace
at all:

```
$ /opt/homebrew/bin/cargo check -p buzz-db
error: rustc 1.89.0 is not supported by the following packages:
  sqlx@0.9.0 requires rustc 1.94.0
  ...                                                    # exit 101
```

Verifying with `PATH="$HOME/.cargo/bin:$PATH" cargo test` does *not*
protect the
push: lefthook's `pre-push` → `just test-unit` re-resolves `cargo` from
the
shell's own PATH, so a green local run is followed by a hook failure on
a crate
you never touched. Export the PATH for the whole shell, not per-command.
This
bit twice.

**2. Line-scope your mutations, or the mutation edits its own
detector.** When
mutation-testing the respond-to guard, a whole-file `sed` on the mode
literal
touches 5 sites — the guard *and* the fixtures/assertions that test it.
The
mutation and its detector move together and the suite stays green, which
reads
as "this code is dead" when it actually means "you deleted the
experiment":

```
# WRONG — 5 sites, guard and tests mutate together
$ sed -i '' 's/"allowlist"/"allowlist-DISABLED"/g' src/env.rs
test result: ok. 145 passed; 0 failed          # false survivor
# RIGHT — 1 site, anchored to the guard's own definition line
$ sed -i '' '/^const RESPOND_TO_ALLOWLIST/s/"allowlist"/"allowlist-DISABLED"/' src/env.rs
failures:
    env::tests::allowlist_mode_with_an_empty_list_is_refused
    env::tests::an_allowlist_entry_that_is_not_64_hex_is_refused
test result: FAILED. 143 passed; 2 failed      # real kill
```

Restore by copying a pristine file back and confirming `git diff --stat`
is
empty, not by re-running an inverse `sed`.

**3. A completeness guard is not a correctness guard.** The shared wire
fixture
`tests/fixtures/provider-wire/deploy-full-launch.request.json` passed
every test
we had while containing four classes of invented data (wrong
`respond_to`
encoding, an env key no emitter writes, allowlist entries that fail the
harness's own 64-hex rule, a `launch.env` key from no descriptor layer).
The
provider's tests could not have caught this: its types are deliberately
indifferent to these values (`Option<String>`, `Vec<String>`, arbitrary
map), so
"the provider parses it" was never evidence that the desktop emits it.
The fix
was not a stronger provider assertion but a rule about provenance —
"recorded"
means executed-and-transcribed, and the desktop's whole-object equality
test is
the only enforcement that can exist. See the fixture README.

**4. Every drift this arc was a value that agreed with itself.** Five
invented
values were found, and not one was caught by an assertion failing — each
was
caught by someone asking where a value came from. A named constant
referenced
symbolically on both the fixture and assertion side. A `sed` that
mutated its
own detector. Six probe rows that all died at the same unrelated error.
A
descriptor struct literal compared against a fixture built from that
literal
(`launch.args: ["run","--session"]`, which the resolver actually returns
as
`["acp"]`). The general defense is not more assertions but provenance: a
stub is
a control that varies nothing, and the more faithful it looks the better
it
hides. Ask what executed, not what passed.

*Fixture-test determinism caveat (post-verification, Quinn + Dawn).* The
desktop's whole-object fixture test calls the real resolver, which
consults a
process-global harness registry whose own docs require
`registry_test_lock`
for any test touching it. The fixture test holds no lock and is
nonetheless
deterministic — but by containment, not by ordering. Measured, not
derived:
planting a definition with `id: "goose"` directly into the registry
(bypassing
the loader) changes the resolved descriptor from `args: ["acp"]` to
`args: ["--poisoned"]`, so `resolve_effective_harness_descriptor`
**does**
reach the registry for this id — it does not short-circuit on the
builtin
table first. Two controls discriminate: an empty registry and a registry
poisoned under a *different* id both return `["acp"]`. What actually
protects
the test is that the registry has exactly one writer
(`update_loaded_harness_registry`, reached only via
`warm_harness_registry_from_dir`) — but that writer concatenates **two**
sources of unequal strength (`custom_harnesses.rs:319-326`). Custom
files
pass through `load_custom_harnesses`, whose `check_id_collision` rejects
the
reserved builtin id `goose` case-insensitively at the loader — and that
leg
is tested (`load_applies_id_collision_check` writes a real `goose.json`
and
asserts the loader drops it). Preset definitions
(`preset_harness_definitions`, `presets.rs:177-193`) are a bare `.map`
over
`PRESET_HARNESSES` with **no collision check** — exhaustive call-site
enumeration at `60007fda4` finds four production `check_id_collision`
sites,
none on the preset path. That leg holds only because `goose` is not in
the
preset table today (intersection of TIER1 and preset ids is empty) —
executed, not just read: adding a preset with `id: "goose"`,
`args: ["--poisoned"]` and warming via the normal preset-only path
(`warm_harness_registry_from_dir(None)`, no custom dir, no direct
writer)
flips the fixture's emitted `launch.args` from `["acp"]` to
`["--poisoned"]`
at `60007fda4`, command/env/policy_env unchanged. So: no test in the
suite
can put a `goose` entry in the registry
via the custom path, and no preset currently carries one, so no
interleaving
can perturb this fixture — containment with one checked leg and one
coincidental one. A future fixture built on a **non-builtin** runtime id
has
no containment at all — it would be order-dependent against whatever
registry-writing test ran last and must take the lock.

*Late instance, found while reviewing the mode guard.* The guard
exact-matches
`respond_to` untrimmed and case-sensitively, which is only correct if
clap's
`ValueEnum` derive is case-sensitive. `config.rs` gives two answers: the
derive
at `:448-453` carries no `ignore_case`, while the crate's own tests call
`RespondTo::from_str(s, true)` — `ignore_case = true`. Reading the
source
supports either. Measured on the built binary instead: `owner-only`
starts,
`OWNER-ONLY` / `Owner-Only` / `ALLOWLIST` / `NOBODY` all exit rc=2
`invalid
value`. Case-sensitive at the CLI, so the guard is right — and right for
a
reason the source does not state. The `from_str(_, true)` tests exercise
a
different surface and are not evidence about the CLI.

*Corollary, and the sharper half.* When a test helper **reimplements**
production instead of calling it, the helper is a fork — and a fork can
be
right while production is wrong, or wrong in the same way, and the suite
reports green either way. Both `BUZZ_ACP_ALLOWED_*` gates are forked
like this:
production compares **strings** while the helpers compare **post-parse
enums**
(`config.rs:2623`) or re-derive the split
(`buzz-cli/.../channels.rs:1296`).
Production and the helper each carry their *own* copy of the empty-entry
filter
(`:1025` and `:1300`), so fixing one says nothing about the other.
Measured on
`buzz-cli`, restoring byte-exact between runs:

| tree | result |
|---|---|
| baseline | 274 passed |
| drop the empty-filter in **production** only (the real fix) | **274
passed** — no signal |
| drop it in the **test helper** only | **273 passed, 1 failed**
(`channels.rs:1338`) |

Two independent defects, stacked, and worse together than either alone:
production can be fixed with no test ever noticing, *and* the helper
cannot be
corrected without a false alarm demanding the bug back. The root cause
is one
bit of type information — `check_allowed_channel_add_policy(allowed_raw:
&str,
..)` cannot represent "unset", while production reads `env::var(..) ->
Result`,
where unset and `""` are different states. A helper whose parameter type
can't
represent all of production's input states isn't testing production's
states —
it's testing a subset it silently chose. Same family as the
struct-literal
descriptor and the fixture drift: the test and the thing it tests
agreeing with
each other, rather than the test measuring the thing. Neither defect is
in this
PR's diff (`git diff --name-only 28ae6cd21 <head> -- crates/buzz-cli` is
empty); both are now filed as NIP-34 issues on this repo: the fail-open
+
fork-helper defect at issue event `0524a4113f2d97fd…` and the respond-to
self-lock at `e32837498969b5e7…` (filed 2026-08-02 after Quinn measured
that
no prior filing existed — zero hits on GitHub `block/buzz` open *or*
closed
and zero on the relay's kind:1621 issues, against working positive
controls). The prescription was itself
mutation-tested before being written down: repairing the fork's
signature
(`Option<&str>` + assertion → `None`) still let the reintroduced
production
bug ship 274-green — an expressive fork is still a fork; it never
executes
production. So the `buzz-cli` fix has **three parts and one explicit
keep**:
drop the production filter; **delete** the helper and point its tests at
the
real `cmd_set_add_policy` (which self-discriminates by error variant —
`Usage` = refused, `Network(BadScheme)` = passed the gate — no relay
needed);
serialize the env-var tests behind one
**`tokio::sync::Mutex::const_new`**
lock taken with `.lock().await`, including the pre-existing `:1362`
integration test (the fork was silently buying test isolation — without
the
lock, parallel runs flake nondeterministically; a `std::sync::Mutex`
held
across `.await` trips `clippy::await_holding_lock` under `-D warnings`);
and
**keep** the then-dead `!allowed.is_empty()` clause with a comment
saying
why. It is unreachable-false (`split(',')` never yields an empty vec),
but it
is the only thing that keeps the reintroduced production bug detectable
—
mutation-tested: on a tree that deletes the clause, reintroducing the
empty-filter bug survives 275/0, because `""`/`","`/`" "` refuse either
way
and the filter goes semantically inert. Dead code can be load-bearing
for
tests: "provably unreachable" is an argument about behavior, never about
coverage. When a helper forks production, the fix has to delete the
fork:
any change that leaves two implementations standing can only ever be
verified against the one the tests call. *Final shape:* the keep and the
broad lock are both artifacts of the fork surviving in some form. The
extraction variant (Dawn, mutation-tested at `60007fda4`) removes the
tension: extract one `check_channel_add_policy_allowed(Option<&str>,
&str)`
that **production calls**, with the `Option` placed at the env boundary
where the `Result<String, VarError>` bit actually lives. 5/6 mutants
killed; the empty-filter survivor is proven **equivalent** (exhaustive
6174-pair check, 0 divergences, with a diverging negative control;
independently re-derived by a second generator — different tokens and
shape — 0 divergences on admitted policies, 500 on a non-admitted
control),
not a coverage hole — on a one-implementation tree there is no fork left
to
witness, so no dead clause needs keeping. One scope line on that
equivalence: it is **caller-conditional**, a property of the only
current
caller, not of the gate function — `cmd_set_add_policy`'s own match at
`:1027-1034` admits only three policies before the gate runs; a second
caller reaching the gate with arbitrary strings resurrects m1 as a real
hole. The lock does not disappear, it
narrows (Dawn's own correction, caught by Mari): lock exactly the tests
that mutate the process env — three-plus-one on a fork tree, two on the
extraction tree — behind one `tokio::sync::Mutex`, and the lock is part
of
the assertion, not hygiene: with it deleted, the gate test fails 8/8
runs
deterministically by receiving `Network(BadScheme)` where it expects
`Usage` — the unset test's `remove_var` clobbers the other's `set_var`,
and
**the gate test passes straight through the gate**, a false negative on
the
exact authz assertion the test exists to make. State it as an outcome:
these two tests must not observe each other's env writes. 276/0 stable
across 5 parallel runs, clippy `-D warnings` clean; independently
verified
(patch applied to a second worktree: result blob `d67e584be` matches the
patch index, full mutant matrix reproduces row for row). One new row no
earlier
prescription covered: collapsing unset into `Some("")` fails **closed**
—
an unconfigured deployment refuses every policy — killed by the unset
test.
Patch: `OUTBOX/BUZZ_CLI_ADD_POLICY_GATE_EXTRACT_FIX.patch`. The filed
issue
(`0524a411…`) carries the fork-shape prescription; whoever picks it up
should prefer the extraction shape, drop the dead-clause keep with it,
and
keep part 3 outcome-shaped: serialize whichever tests mutate the env.

## Verification (final HEAD `60007fda4`)
- Full touched-package suites at each integration merge (log in plan
file).
  At candidate parent `00e5b5fe9`: buzz-backend-kubernetes 154,
buzz-acp 673, desktop tauri 2100+3, pnpm 3908, workspace clippy/fmt/tsc
all clean. The only delta to `60007fda4` is one character in
`scripts/test-k8s-sprig-image-live.sh` (heredoc escape so the readlink
probe evaluates pod-side, not host-side at render); `crates/` tree hash
is byte-identical at both SHAs, so the Rust receipts attach by tree
  identity. buzz-backend-kubernetes suite re-run in-shell at
  `HEAD == 60007fda4`: 154 passed.
- Adversarial one-HEAD gate (Sami): guard matrix 12/12, predicate
mutants
  7/7, doomed-invocation finding closed end-to-end; tree-hash carry to
  `60007fda4` confirmed (crates/buzz-backend-kubernetes blob unchanged).
- Live-local pass per TESTING.md + skill-buzz-testing (Perci, at
`60007fda4`): explicit `docker-desktop` context, digest-qualified image
  imported into node containerd `k8s.io` namespace, pull policy `Never`;
pod printed `DIGEST_ABI_OK`, `resolved_spec` and `image_id` both the
exact requested digest, script exit 0. Dedicated per-run namespace,
ownership labels on every object, scoped cleanup verified empty after.
- Implementation review (Wren) at `60007fda4`: 9.6 minimalness /
  9.4 elegance / 9.3 correctness, no blocker.
- `origin/eva/k8s-backend` == `60007fda4` (ls-remote verified; SHA
  identity is byte identity).

3a96acea09 chore(release): release Buzz Desktop version 0.5.3 (#3972)
## Buzz Desktop release v0.5.3

- **Frozen main:** `54c8ef30a9bb9c59a4415a8a7ee84c7c5454b48a`
- **Reviewed candidate:** `d0c06978bbf494ded6fe1a55d69d810ae9b65863`
- **Previous desktop release:** `v0.5.2`
- **Proposed immutable tag:** `desktop-v0.5.3`

This PR must be **squash merged** only after the Desktop Release
Candidate check passes. The branch must remain based directly on current
; stale base, payload drift, incomplete notes, or an unauthorized merge
produce no tag.

The checked-in changelog accounts for every non-merge commit in the
release range. Publication remains bound to the immutable candidate tag.

61ba9dfaa0 refactor(voice): extract reusable Pocket primitives + Pocket voice settings (relands #2467 + #3208) (#3910)
Relands **#2467** (extract `buzz-voice` crate) and **#3208** (Pocket
voice settings) onto main, after #3266 and #3180 merged.

## Why a fresh PR
The repo is squash-only with delete-branch-on-merge. Squashing #3266
deleted `jtennant/pocket-tts-2026-04`, which was #2467's base — GitHub
auto-closed #2467 and it cannot be reopened. Squash merges also sever
ancestry, so GitHub's natural merge-base reports phantom conflicts for
the whole remaining stack.

## Content provenance
- Byte-identical to the blessed `jt/buzz-voice-refactor` branch
(`93029c577`, tree `6729e0eff` — reviewed by Dawn (#2467) and Max
(#3208) at exact heads) **except** the three files where #3180 and #3208
genuinely interact.
- Three-file resolution (union of both sides):
- `huddle/mod.rs` — #3180's pipeline re-exports + #3208's
`agent_tts_routing` imports.
- `huddle/state.rs` — `reset_preserving_generation` preserves both
`huddle_generation` (#3180) and `tts_enabled` (#3208); test sets merged
into one `tests` module.
- `desktop/src/testing/e2eBridge.ts` — both switch arms kept; no
duplicate case labels.

## Verification at cf32dacd7
- `cargo test` (desktop/src-tauri, pinned 1.95.0): **2047 + 3 pass / 0
fail** (14 ignored: 8 keychain, 4 real_relay, 2 flag-gated)
- `cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings`: clean; `cargo fmt
--check`: clean
- `cargo check --workspace` (root, includes new `buzz-voice` member):
clean; `cargo test -p buzz-voice`: 5/0
- `pnpm test`: **3885 / 0**; `tsc --noEmit`: clean; lint: clean

The 3180×3208 interaction resolution is getting an independent team
re-review before merge.

d48b0e0eec feat(desktop): upgrade Pocket TTS model (#3266)
## Context

Buzz Desktop currently installs an older Pocket TTS model bundle. The
current
bundle changes the tokenizer, learned BOS input, recurrent-state
contract, and
prompt behavior, so updating download URLs alone is not compatible.

## Summary

This PR upgrades Buzz Desktop to the current pinned Pocket TTS model. It
preserves existing product behavior and the hard 50-token model-input
limit
while adding the required runtime support, verified acquisition, and
crash-safe
cache migration.

## Changes

- Pins an immutable Pocket TTS revision, artifact names, exact byte
sizes,
SHA-256 checksums, Mary reference voice, and license.
- Loads the bundle-matched SentencePiece tokenizer, learned BOS
embedding, and
  bundle-declared recurrent states.
- Uses one pinned Pocket TTS configuration; no precision or
model-version
  selector is added.
- Preserves the resident engine's exact `<= 50` token contract without
changing
  Desktop segmentation policy.
- Bumps the Pocket cache manifest to v4, verifies size and checksum
before
adoption, atomically swaps the cache, and recovers the last verified
cache
after interrupted installs, including an incomplete final directory.
- Keeps acquisition, cache migration, worker adoption, and tests within
the
  existing Desktop implementation.
- Removes the obsolete model-quality harness, which was coupled to the
superseded production prompt and model layout.

## Related issue

None.

## Testing

Manual listening completed on the exact Desktop build. The updated model
improved speech quality and resolved the phrase-start and sample-onset
artifacts. Reproducible integrity and model checks are below.

## Screenshots

N/A. This changes model installation and speech synthesis, not a visual
surface.

## Reviewer-reproducible examples

### Before and after model identity

```sh
git show 35305bfc8fd456ca9a17caa1ddbfaabd87d46981:desktop/src-tauri/src/huddle/models.rs \
  | grep -E 'sherpa-onnx-pocket-tts|TTS_MODEL_VERSION'
git show 211d17c58567448fe7ac95c4fa0ad2b88378849a:desktop/src-tauri/src/huddle/pocket_models.rs \
  | grep -E 'MODEL_REPOSITORY|MODEL_REVISION|MODEL_PRECISION|MAX_TOKENS'
```

The target branch identifies the January bundle. The PR branch
identifies the
immutable April revision, INT8 precision, and 50-token maximum.

### Deterministic runtime validation

Use the pinned artifacts listed in `pocket_models.rs` and run the
model-dependent Pocket tests with the model directory supplied by the
test environment. The checked-in long-sentence fixture must preserve its
expected 48 and 44 token split and produce non-silent PCM.

### Manual listening validation

John listened to an untrimmed Pocket TTS onset-stress clip generated
from the exact user-provided passage, with every sentence synthesized
separately and identical 100 ms digital-silence boundaries. The clip
used no leading period, onset trimming, gain adjustment, or loudness
normalization.

The updated model produced better-quality speech and resolved the
start-of-sample artifacts.

bd0bff24bf feat(desktop): add password-protected backups in settings (#3701)
**Category:** new-feature
**User Impact:** Users can create, download, and verify a
password-protected backup of their private identity from desktop
Settings.

**Problem:** Buzz does not currently give signed-in users a
Settings-based path to protect or validate their private identity
independently of onboarding. **Solution:** Add a focused backup menu to
the private-key row, keep encryption and verification local in Rust, and
preserve completed encrypted backups briefly so native saves can be
retried without repeating encryption.

<details>
<summary>File changes</summary>

**desktop/src/features/settings/**
Adds the background backup lifecycle, create and test dialogs,
private-key menu integration, password handling, and focused unit
coverage.

**desktop/src/features/onboarding/ui/NsecMaskedDisplay.tsx**
Extends the masked private-key display with reusable overflow-menu
actions used by Settings.

**desktop/src/app/App.tsx**
Mounts the backup provider at app scope so encryption and save work
survive closing Settings or the modal.

**desktop/src/shared/api/tauriIdentity.ts**
Adds typed desktop bindings for local backup creation, save, selection,
and verification.

**desktop/src-tauri/src/key_backup.rs and
desktop/src-tauri/src/commands/identity.rs**
Implements local NIP-49 encryption, password generation, file handling,
and public-identity-only verification results.

**desktop/src-tauri/src/egress_guard.rs and guarded call sites**
Blocks encrypted secret material from relay, websocket, snapshot,
sharing, and huddle egress paths.

**desktop/src-tauri tests and fixtures**
Covers encryption, verification, file behavior, and fail-closed
no-egress protections.

**desktop/src/testing/e2eBridge.ts, desktop/tests/, and
desktop/playwright.config.ts**
Expands the mock native bridge and browser coverage across create,
retry, expiry, and current/different-identity verification states.

**desktop/src-tauri/Cargo.toml, Cargo.lock, and assets**
Adds the local cryptography/password-generation dependencies and
embedded short-word list.

</details>

## Reproduction steps

1. Run the desktop app and open **Settings → Profile → Identity**.
2. Open the private-key overflow menu and choose **Create backup**.
3. Enter or generate a valid password, submit, and confirm progress
continues if the dialog or Settings is closed.
4. Save the resulting `.ncryptsec` file; cancel and retry to confirm the
temporary download remains available.
5. Choose **Test backup**, select the file, enter a wrong password, then
retry with the correct password.
6. Confirm success identifies whether the backup matches the current
identity and displays only the public `npub`.

4933672eb4 feat(mesh): upgrade embedded mesh to v0.74 and harden shared compute (split 1/2 of #3467) (#3741)
## Summary

This is **part 1 of 2** split out from #3467 (per Tyler's request),
carrying only the mesh-scoped changes. The agent/ACP response-behavior
changes and the new `send_message` tool stay in #3467 as part 2. All
commits are @michaelneale's work, cherry-picked with authorship
preserved.

- Upgrade embedded Mesh to v0.74.0 (tag-pinned instead of commit rev)
and use canonical Gemma model IDs.
- Keep shared compute serving through member joins, roster changes, app
recovery, and community switching.
- Wait for actual model readiness and avoid resuming incomplete
downloads after quit.
- Leave `BUZZ_AGENT_THINKING_EFFORT` unset by default so each model's
chat template picks its own thinking default (`none` suppressed Gemma
tool-calling entirely; pinning `low` made Qwen3 burn ~4x output budget).
Explicit agent/persona/global values still win.

## Relationship to #3467

Contains the mesh commits from #3467 (`2cd640b23`, `0ad81c341`,
`ad13ed841`) rebased onto current main, with one deliberate exclusion:
the `crates/buzz-agent/src/llm.rs` reasoning→text parser change from
`2cd640b23` is **not** here. That change unconditionally affects every
OpenAI-compat/Responses provider, so it belongs with the reply-behavior
work in part 2, where it can be reviewed as what it is.

Not included (remaining in #3467 / part 2):
- typed `send_message` tool in dev-mcp + `BUZZ_ACP_SEND_MESSAGE_TOOL`
gating
- plain-reply delivery fallback in buzz-acp
(`BUZZ_ACP_DELIVER_PLAIN_REPLIES`)
- the mesh_agent_e2e P5/P6 rewrite (exists to prove the reply path)
- the two `env.insert` preset opt-ins in `relay_mesh.rs` for the flags
above
- the llm.rs parser change

This PR is independently mergeable; part 2's flags are all off by
default so it can land before or after.

## Testing

- `cargo test -p buzz-relay --locked` — 780 passed (one telemetry test
is order-sensitive under parallel default settings; passes in the
pre-push suite and standalone, unrelated to this diff — files untouched
here).
- `just desktop-tauri-test` (default features) — 1877 passed.
- `cargo test --locked --features mesh-llm` in `desktop/src-tauri` —
1961 passed, including the new relay-mesh preset and
coordinator/recovery tests.
- Both `Cargo.lock`s resolve with `--locked` against the v0.74.0 tag.
- Full pre-push hook suite green (rust-tests, desktop-check/test, tauri
checks).

Live validation of the mesh v0.74 upgrade itself is documented on #3467
(two-Mac cross-version test).
